Just bring your friggin gun, because they're not going to come to the same call twice, stay upwind and try some cut silage I shot two foxes in a silage field a fortnight ago at 5 O'clock in the evening. Three foxes actually came in to the call. I was using a wam caller.

No point in calling them unless you intend on shooting them. Otherwise all you are doing in educating old Charlie!!

I wouldn't shoot them this time of year myself unless they were causing a problem. Let them raise the cubs and ensure we have plenty of shooting for the winter months.:D

    Just my opinion.

    i could be wrong but,

if the mother of the cubs gets shot doesnt anoter relative of the fox take over the parental role or did i hear completly wrong..
    or
do the cubs die if the mother dies..eg no food etc

    thanks

Can't say I've heard that before, but that doesn't mean its not true.

My motto is let them be for the summer and rare the cubs (unless they are proving to be a problem with lambs, fowl etc) I don't see the point in taking a chance that some other vixen will take on cubs that aren't hers.

Then as I said in my earlier post bang away for the autumn/winter.

    Again, just my tuppence worth!

as with most things if you kill the mother the young will die , unless, they are old enough to survive on whatever the dog fox will bring them ,if not then they'll starve

Well then I'd say they are problem fox's and need sorting.

Like Deeksofdoom said, stay up wind and if possible on cut silage and give a few calls.

    Best of luck.

This time of year most cubs are well able to hunt for themselves, even though the vixen will still be feeding them for a good while yet!

Once cubs start to come above ground during the warm days, there already catching frogs and mice, eating slugs and moths at night!

Those cubs that Johngalway shot a couple of weeks ago are well big enough to servive on their own, and do dammage too!

I agree with most lads here, and give vermin shooting a break during the summer months!

They were good stumps of cubs alright Eddie.

Other foxes in a group have been known to bring food to cubs.

As for calling them in, I'd go with bringing the gun. If it won't cause you a problem making them call shy, it may well cause someone else a problem.

The wam is the right job, get plenty of practice in with it, I find that if I blow it through my fingers it makes a more convincing sound.

Going to give it a shot in the morning. Wont get much shooting from saturday onwards for a week or 2 so going tomorrow morn for fox thats being appearing at the uncles ( in daylight hours), then off to another spot for rabbits;)

Plenty of foxes now that the silage fields are also getting some slurry spread on them, I was out after crows the other day when i got an old charlie coming tripping accross the field sniffing around. Got him to stand still by just squeaking my lips (like what you do to a budgie)

He couldnt see me at all as I was well in a ditch with a cammo net over me. Got 5 greys 1 fox and two mags in the space of 90 minutes. All with the 10/22*

    * The author normally shoots foxes with a 22 hornet which he finds most suitable for the job, however on this occassion the fox was clearnly dispatched at 50 meters using Eley sub sonics. The author would not take a shot at a fox over 50 meters with a 22 lr. No midges/wasps or bees were harmed in the shooting of the above vermin

PMSL, so your an author now!:D

But I do think its pathetic that you would have to justify shooting a fox with a .22LR, for fear of some hysterical know it all ripping the arsehole out of you for it, if your rifle was zeroed and you were sure of a clean kill and the opportunity presented itself then fire away.

That was a good bag by the way those greys and mags are worse than any fox, keep up the good work!

Lads over the last few weeks i was out with the crow caller had it on a ditress call and the 3 days i was out i had foxes on the move around me has any one heard of foxes coming to a crow distress call or is it just a fluke.unusual that they would be on the move that early in the day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭deeksofdoom

I have had them come in to a duck call and grey crows coming in to a wham call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭Eddie B

I've shot plenty of foxes over the years while calling magpies, and shot plenty of mags while using the fox squeal!
All virmin are very opportunistic, and very inquisitive!

Well its a hot topic here Id say on average every quarter there is a major debate:rolleyes:on the shooting of foxes with anything less than a 223.

I was using the hornet on greys but its kinda expensive

Yeah I have 22 magnum and you can go from lamping foxes to rabbits and not worry about the cost.

I've shot several foxes with a .22 between 40 and 80 yards and it dropped them.

But I use a .223 as most of the farms have made their fields bigger so rarely do you get that close to a fox these days

dont want to hijack the post...but I got the 10/22 because I missed shooting rabbits and greys etc..Had a remmy in 22 mag and accounted for hundreds of foxes and i cant knock the hornet but i've gone back to 40grn hollow point to hold them better

by the reads of this it is very successful so long as your well camouflaged?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭landkeeper

it's not so much the camoflage but movement foxes see like dogs ie they are colour blind and will walk right up to you if you remain still ;)

They might not come to that call again when it matters! you'd be best to change calls when visiting again. worth a try anyway!

There are some well developed young knocking around now and they come running in as a group sometimes- could explain high numbers in one sighting but i dont know what you really saw out there!

Well TBH you could do that hunting in your T-shirt & shorts as long as you weren't into loud colours and stood still behind some light cover.:D

But camo allows you to set up and take position in the field in nearly any location. Hopefully you find a seat with a view.

Camo also give you the ability move and with that come field craft

IMO before camo clothes was the simple hide made out of cut bushes and such. Camo clothes are like wearing a hide built for one..
