Upgrading Java on OSX 10.4 - Possible?

    As per the title is is possible to upgrade to the latest version of Java on OSX 10.4 or is the user forced to upgrade the OS in order to upgrade the Java version?

    It should be Java Standard Edition 6 (1.6.0_20) - check on http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

    The software update option on the Mac on OSX 10.4 doesn't offer an updated version of Java and the java.com site refers you back to the Mac's software update.

    The impression I get is that the version of Java you can use on a Mac is dependent on the version of the OS that is installed.
    Unlike Windows and Linux where you can upgrade easily enough. :(

    The Java site is no use as Sun has nothing to do with Java for Mac. They just license it to Apple who port Java for use on OS X.

    Apple port it with a particular OS version in mind. So even if you could get the latest Mac version to install, it probably wouldn't work.

    Java for OS X 10.4 Release 9, released June 15th 2009 appears to be the latest version.

    It seems an upgrade of the OS might be the easiest solution.
