Currently going through a lean patch as regards money but its always good to look to the future I feel.

Anyway I'm trying to figure out what car I would like next. leaving aside the price of this car what do people think?

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Civic/1.4-S%23R-/201010197187986/advert?channel=CARS

My current ride is a........wait for it..........2001 Toyota Corolla SALOON

I'm not to bothered if the car looks well as long as it drives well, is reliable, reasonable on petrol and salable when the time comes.

I'm playing with the idea of getting a bigger car, a Rover 75 diesel, a Pug 407 HDI or something along those lines. But I don't want to disregard small petrol saloons just yet as the Corolla has been a pleasure, if just a bit bland to drive.

Anyway I'm not doing a change soon but would like something to aim for in the coming months

Op keep your corolla for the rest of your life before buying a peugeot or rover. They are heaps of ****.. That honda is a nice car. Good car op and reliable but that pug or rover will break you;).

The Honda has all the good stuff from your list, although the hatch is a better drive and sells faster.
As Sarason says don't touch a Rover, they are dead and gone. There are some good Pug's though, but they tend to all give trouble at some time or other.
The Toyota you have is boring but if my money was tight, I'd keep it on the road.

Exactly id have boring any day as opposed to the car being a guzzler on your wages.

Money is really only a problem for the moment, I've just finished in UCD and fortunately I have good prospects (don't mean to sound like a knob but I've been a long time getting there)

The Rover, or an MG ZT is a morbid attraction, I want but I know I'll get burned

The Pug, I like the styling and drive but am wary of French cars

The Honda, not mad about the looks but i drove a hatch before and thought it was very nice, especially the Vtec engine however it felt a bit like an MPV.

As for the Corolla, its a great car in fairness to it, I got it after having a hell of a time with a Clio. My mechanic felt sorry for me and got the best one he could find and sold it cheap to me.

I can't think of any other nice saloon car that fits the bill. I prefer them to hatchs, no reason really just do...

Maybe take a trip to the uk. Youll get a civic or corolla over there with a way nicer spec than here. That civic has low mileage though and has a sunroof too!

I don't believe the saloons of either were sold there plus I don't think the savings exist any more unless your buying at auction...........and as I've bought a few lemons in my time I'll be steering clear of them ;)

i have a 2004 civic 1.4 saloon. great car, runs great and easy on the drink. I think if i was to choose again i would pick the hatch as nicer looking model.

To be honest, in my eyes your plan is to go from a boring ultra-reliable 2001 saloon to a boring ultra-reliable 2005 saloon???? ....zzzzzzz

Why not go for something slightly different? Hatchback maybe? Or a coupe?

No plan yet, I'm starting early and doing my homework this time so that I can hopefully get something I would like to keep!

The BMW and Audi are runners but I'm looking for something that won't break the bank to run either. Not sure if I'm doing enough mileage to warrant a diesel, also my brother has an A4 TDI so can't copy him :D

I'm just thinking for the minute and getting ideas, but I'd like something that is good to drive. I can live with the looks and image as long as I enjoy driving it.

    Thanks Chris.

The look of neither is really desirable but I'm hung up on saloons I'm afraid. I drive the hatch and really liked it, nice and engaging I thought.

The fact you like saloons more will give you a better choice because all the young ones wanting them.

Younger Brother has a 97 corolla for last 7 years with no problems ever. He is mad for something like yourself.

As a former civic, peugeot and renault driver and current toyota driver, i would steer the hell away from peugeot for a start. You will go broke from repairs to it. I bought a piece of dirt civic from a friend for 800 euro and it never gave any trouble, despite retiring with almost 300,000km on it.
You're doing ok with the corolla so drive it into the ground. Then get a honda of some sort, you wont go wrong!

I had a Golf and Clio which gave me no end of trouble! A couple of friends have had Pug diesels and they went well.

Afraid I get bored with cars after 12 months or so and need to move on. To some it doesn't make sense but I'm young, no loans and no kids so I'm planning on enjoying life while I can :p (although I know some of you may not agree with my boring saloons)
