BP able to buy phrases and words - new one on me!

    I didn't even know one could do it but apparently its possible to buy search engine phrases - a new one for me!
    Learned this through reading about BP buying such words (story here) and was wondering...

    Is there anything lately (or not so lately) that you have found out, that has surprised you?

    Maybe they didn't buy Irelands as a google of "oil spill" as quoted in that article did not find BPs homepage as top result.

    They're not buying search phrases, they're buying ad space that appears when certain words are used.

    Aaa... I get what you mean.
    Still, they still have to buy phrases as such in order to do this so its still a new one on me.
    I hadn't put much thought into how they go about placing their stuff at the top so I was surprised to this latest piece of info. :o

    That's just how google advertising works. It's costing them a fortune to always appear when people go searching for oil spills and ecological disasters. What's the point exactly?
