What was the greatest goal ever scored in football?

It's hard to pick, but I'd have to go for McConville's in the All Ireland final against Kerry!

Here's 100 of the best from youtube:

Foley against the dubs 1991, started with martin o connell with 1 foot on his own end line, finished with foley about 3 yards out, best team goal ever!!!!!!

For me that was without doubt the greatest ever. Given the context of it - the closing minutes of an epic series of games, they needed a goal to rescue it, and to work the ball the length of the pitch like that was immense. A fitting finale to a great tussle.

That Meath team were remarkable in their ability to keep going and never give up. Even against Down in the final I think they were 11 points down at one stage and nearly turned it around only to run out of clock in the finish.

    Seamus Darby anyone?

probably the greatest in terms of what it meant but not the greatest execution of a goal by any means.

My favourite is Padraigh Brogan for Mayo v Dublin in the 1985 All Ireland semi-final replay

Be honest there so many great goals its hard to pick out one. 50 Gaols could be put here and nobody would pick same one.

I am biased but Joe Kavanagh goal was peach against Meath in AI in 1999. Had Cork won think would be given much more credit then got.

    No contest

    Karl Mannion

the fact he took about 8 steps and it should have been a free out means it loses alot of its quality. great finish, but if everybody was allowed away with that like he was, we would see goals goals goals in every match.

Thank God there's somebody out there who remembers this unbelievable goal.

When TG4 had their 50 best goals ever they only placed it at either 18 or 19. I couldn't believe it. I knew the top two were going to be Foley's and Darby's and don't have any problem with that, but to put this goal that far down was downright criminal.

Padraig Brogan for me too but Karl Mannions is a peach.

Meath against Dublin stands out just for the drama along, a magic summer that.

Mulligan vs. Dublin surely deserves a mention?

Karl Mannion scores a dramatic goal to defeat Corofin of Galway in the 2006 Connacht Senior Club Football Championship.

All great goals. Never seen Karol Mannions goal before. I'd say Eoin Mulligans would be one of the best up with Foley's.
Zac Tuohy's goal in the minor final a few years ago was class as well

Atrocious defending for mulligans goal. Well taken but against other teams it probably wouldn't have been that easy.

Yea, defending was absolutely terrible which takes away from it in my eyes but having said that Mulligan did what he planned and it worked. Very well taken goal but (as a bias Dubliner hehe) i wouldnt say best goal ive seen. The Rhode v Portlaoise one above was some finish if the lob was intended. Always question if it was just put foot to ball and hope but spectacular all the same. Ya dont often get spectacular goals in football. Usually well worked forward and ends up being a piledriver past the keeper from 10 yards but always great to see a good solo effort or long ranged strike.

right, watch this till the end. You won't get a better goal to win a game in a final. last minute with your team two points down. Well done Gerry Lohan!

+1 on this immediately comes to mind.
Also the goal tipp scored against kerry in this year's championship.

have to go for jack o'shea's v offaly in 1981 final. started inside their own 14.

The goal I lobbed over the St Paul's keeper from 40 yards in the Waterford City U-10 championship back in 1990 will never be rivalled by any man, anywhere ever.

Maurice Fitz v Armagh. The execution was just perfect.

This one isnt on youtube or nothing but thomas walsh for Carlow against Wicklow about 2 years ago down in wexford park, went on a run from inside his own half straight through the defence and buried it.
Close second is Eoin Mulligans in croke park against the Dubs

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 749 ✭✭✭Bill2673

An absolute peach for me was Eamonn O'Hara in the Connacht Final of 2007, a pure GAA goal and taken with his left foot (is that his strong foot?)....I've no affiliation with either county but I thought this was class, and I'd personally rate it ahead of Mulligans for the speed and the team involvement.

1991 All Ireland Semi Final - Derek Duggan goal for Roscommon against Meath. Dummied the defender, took a step and drop kicked it from 20m - keeper never moved.

Can't find it anywhere on the web - it wasn't a long flowing move or it didn't go into the top corner but its execution was fantastic.

I'm confident Tony Mc dropped in that pass to Derek Duggan

Turned inside the defence and a rocket of a drop kick to the roof of the net

That one gets forgotten because Cork lost, just like 99. The through pass was a thing of beauty!

Fantastic goal but sucked when you are in Croker supporting the opposition.

Ciaran Mc Manus's long rang goal a few years ago deserves a mention (not the one mentioned above)

Ciaran Whelan's against Armagh in the All-Ireland Semi Final in 2002

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,971 ✭✭✭teednab-el

Darran O Sullivans goal against Armagh 2006 Quarter Final sent Kerry on their way. Great goal but was disgusted to see Kerry winning as I was in Croker that day for the Cork V Donegal game :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭yahoo_moe

I presume it's in the OP's video... but can't believe this hasn't got a second mention yet:

Lashing the ball in from 21 yards on the run is all very well (seriously, it's great) but I'd be looking for something that really stands out for being a bit different to name it the greatest ever. The Rhode v Portlaoise goal above has the same wow factor.

I always taught the keeper should got to that if honest. Great thinking but keeper did not even jump for it

Don't think it is the best ever scored, but for pure cheekiness, opportunism and importance, it is up there.

That goal would be there were it not for the fact that even Sheehy didn't think it should have been a goal. Great thinking but it should never have been allowed stand.

Begrudgingly Eoin Mulligan's goal just beats out Ciaran Whelan's goal v Armagh in 2002 for best goal in my book. I saw both of them from pretty much the exact same place and Mulligan's was genius.
