Ok so it is Monday night, The leagues start this sunday in either Antrim or Tullamore. Has any ideas where what teams are??

Also who do we think are favourites this year for them??
You would be a mad man to bet against Clonlife for the mens
But womens, If ferrybank got there star runners they could push for top honors this year. I can push Tir Conail??

    who cares...it's the league

I'd be pretty much on that line of thought too. Tír Chonaill have a lot of versatile athletes, but Ferrybank technically have stronger individuals. The last few years, versatility have won out so we'll have to wait and see this year.
    who cares...it's the league

Not very helpful, some people obviously care.

I seem to recall you were one of the ones leaving quite a few comments about the league this time last year. So some people do care and from previous evidence you were one of them:D

Not a chance you would be after a time for the europeans..... Don't really get your points, Should we only have races and meets for the top guys ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40 anotheronebites

seeing as we dont have any races for the top irish athletes in ireland (you can hardly call cork a top class meet) it might be a step in the right direction if we put on a meet for them no?

While fully aware you are a Wind Up Merchant, I'll play along;)

Kelly Proper, Jamie Costin, Mark Kenneally, Ailis McSweeney are others who 'lower' themselves to represent their clubs in domestic league competition when athletes who aren't even near the standards of these athletes would consider the league and other such comps to be beneath them.

Generally, the clubs who 'don't care' about the league are those who lack ambition and who are happy to be one trick ponies, ie, a 'sprinters' club or a 'distance' club. If you look at the clubs who regularly challenge for honours it is the top clubs with ambition- Tir Chonnail, DSD [they could be stronger though], Ferrybank, Clonliffe, Raheny, Shercock, Ballymena, Leevale, North Down, Crusaders, St Abbans, Tullamore, Menapians, Meath Co Board, Kerry Co Board etc. They may not have athletes to cover all events but they attempt it at least. Creates a club/county that has a wide range of athletes across a lot of events over time even in the leagues current format which admittedly does need an overhaul.

May I ask what club you are with yourself and we can gauge is your apathy based on a lack of success?

i got kicked out of my club for winding everyone up :o:o:o:o:o:p;):cool:

So are you going to answer Shels question? Would you only have meets for the elite? What happens when they retire, who will replace them?

    Brian Gregan this year
    Indoors 9th in European ranking

    Sean Connolly (5k)
Outdoor ranked 28th in European Ranking

Really arent making your point both have made global championships in the past 7 months (Euro XC and World Indoors) onehaving standard for European outdoors.
If we look to some of the results few names pop out, Adrian o Dwyer, Kourosh Foroughi, John Travers

So i have ticked euro rankings and olympians off your list me. Is 2/3 satisfactory we could throw in National Champ medalists junior international representatives and more.

sean connolly is a good runner, dont get me wrong..but hes hardly going to fill the stands..

as for gregan..he is a good runner, and destined for great things...but is the league on indoor or outdoor competition?? and as such shouldn't we use outdoor rankings to determine the calibre of outdoor performances we could see at an outdoor league competition??

answer me this...if the league is so important than why does it receive NO attention from any mainstream media? you've already admitted the league is deeply flawed, why can't you admit that, as a competition, it sucks

i'm glad to see that ecoli is embracing mediocrity so wholeheartedly...how are you doing in this recession? loving it i'm sure;)

tingle...you dont think athletics would be served well by having a decent international meet?? wouldnt that help our juniors..exposing them to top class international competition at home in ireland??? as for the league...do we really need it when we have provincial champs..graded meets, imc meets..gv ryans..aai games...leevale sports...and all the rest??? do u really need a cometition that counts for nothing with no pacers in the distance races and no prize money, even the graded throw a few euro a round to make every one feel good

Regarding the media considering that RTE refused to cover the World's despite having paid for it i would not take this as a indicator. Our national championships get a 30min highlight show twice a year the fact is that athletics is not a mainstream sport anymore.
Given that Gregan has only started his outdoor season (and already ran inside european A standard) i think that we have to base on his most recent season. If we were to go by that logic then Gillick is not the best outdoor 400m runner (because his season hasnt opened)
I was addressing the criteria put forward by yourself in a previous post regarding these runners. regarding filling stands the sport rarely does that (unless you are Bolt). We had the european XC here with some of the top runnings on the continent yet we did not see people clammering to get in fact is if that is the criteria of the sport in this country i think you need to try the EPL and shout your head off for Man City next year.

gregan still is ranked outside europe's top 30 with his opener so hes hardly setting the world on fire...yet, because i think he's going to be very very good...also, you should know that for europeans there is no A or B standard...there's only one standard..clearly you know little about elite athletics if you don't even know how they qualify for a major championships

the league is what it is...people like you will carry on caring about it when no one else even knows it exists and when you're mickey mouse club win division 2 B and you're all on the piss celebrating ill be at home watching gillick, hession and derval in the diamond league

I was running in the park yesterday and there was a football match on, but only 4 people were watcing and the players were very poor, Don't think they would make a premier league team now.. So they should get rid of what ever league they are in...

Winning club go through to European competition so not really for nothing. As one of the rare team events i think it is important to highlight clubs as opposed to just individuals which the sport often ignores. Compare this to the NCAA system and most of there meets involve this system. But what success has that brought? Teg Solinsky Ritz Lagat not to mention about 80% of Irelands "elite" distance runners

As much as I've enjoyed this little back-and-forth, I've decided to give anotheronebites a small time out for general trolling. The thread was started with the intention of discussing the FANTASTIC 2010 National League.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

tingle...you dont think athletics would be served well by having a decent international meet??

We have them, the Cork City Sports has had top names in recent years including Olympic champions. The Irish public don't bother supporting it. When the Morton Mile was on 2 years ago it was free entry and there were pretty decent fields, only 2,000 people turned up on a glorious summer night. I think you might mean a Diamond league type meet but we don't have the support in this country to sustain something like that. It would be a waste of money.
wouldnt that help our juniors..exposing them to top class international competition at home in ireland???

Unless our top juniors are better than the seniors in their event, they should be able to get enough top quality competition at home. Of the 40 championship events, only 4 juniors were the top ranked athletes.
as for the league...do we really need it when we have provincial champs..graded meets, imc meets..gv ryans..aai games...leevale sports...and all the rest??? do u really need a cometition that counts for nothing with no pacers in the distance races and no prize money, even the graded throw a few euro a round to make every one feel good

As I suspected, you think times and pacing is the be all and end all. The league is a club event, used to encourage clubs to have athletes in all disciplines. By default it encourages winning races, battling from 6th to 4th in the last 100m of a 1500 or coming 3rd when you probably should have been 5th. Competitiveness, no pacers, man vs man, woman vs woman, club vs club. I appreciate that some people are more comfortable in a train of 7 or 8 athletes with pace dictated as opposed to having to control a race, make tactical decisions and get in the top 2 because your club and needs it and your clubmates are relying on you. If you saw the Mens 1500 in the final in Tullamore last year you would know what the league is all about. As regards money, as you say you are not in the Top 30 in Europe so why would you expect to get money for racing, if he think you should then you are doing it for the wrong reasons. IMC don't give money as they use what money they have to develop their club and their races. Proper order too.
