Just at the same stage with my fella what i have been doing is starting him walking on the lead and when he tries to get ahead i give him a wee tip on the nose with a thin stick. I have progressed on then to just walking him to heel with the lead wrapped around his neck. Hope this is a help dont know if it is right or wrong as it is my first dog but it is working for me

if he's walking to heel with the lead on and he's not pulling the arm off you, try just leaving the lead on the back of his neck without attaching it to his collar. this worked for my lad, after a few goes of this he should just stay by your side by himself

if your on about getting him to walk to heal on the lead ild go with a check collar. not as harsh as a choke chain but he'll get the message all the same. hope this helps

What I do to get my Springers walking to heal is to put a slip lead (no need for a choke chain) on him. Tap my leg and tell him to heal and walk off. As soon as he passes me to go ahead I about turn sharply and walk in the opposite direction and say heal again. He will come to the end of the lead and get a bit of jolt and turn to follow you. Again when he passes you...about turn and go the opposite direction. He will very quickly start watching you and start to follow. Once he is doing it 100% on the lead...take him out and walk off...then drop the lead and let it drag on the ground...or across his back...if he tries to pass you...you can grab the lead and turn in the opposite direction and remind him ;)
When he is 100% on that you can just drape the lead over his neck and then eventually with no lead.
Using this method, I find it doesn't take long for him to get the message.
