What is the most current SKy HD Box?

    Hi,

I am current customer of SKy for 3 years (3 packs) and called them up today about getting a Sky+ box. The sales dpt. said Euro 150 + 15euro monthly subscription for the Sky+ box + Eur15 for HD even though I dont even have a HD TV. So I said no thank you and was ready to just cancel my SKY subscription altogether.

After getting in touch with the sky cancellation dpt. the guy put me in hold and came back with an offer of an one time fee for E59 (E30 for install and E29 for the HD box) which was an offer that is acceptable to me especially because I am not forced into the E15 extra for HD even though I don't even have a HD TV.

Now I saw there are different HD+ receivers Sky offers and I was wondering which one I should chose if I have the choice or is there one particular model everyone seems to get right now?

Also, if I get a HD capable TV can I remove the SKY card and manually tune to BBC HD with any of the SKY HD receivers or did Sky disable all the HD channels if you don't insert your SKY card? I know u lose recording capabilities but it would be a nice way to check out HD channels without the E15 extra fee.

    Thanks

bbc HD is free to air, as is itv 1 HD in other channels, you can get these free without paying sky €15 sub. Also i think there was some announcment that bbc 1 and bbc 2 would be going HD free to air in the autum. I would think HD would become standard across all channels for free.;)

You done alright. My plus box broke and looked for a replacement, I'm a Sky customer of 12 years and thought I'd get sorted out, not the case.

€259 for a new box and €49 install, so I said I was cancelling the account and the reply I got was "fair enough, I'll put you through to the cancelation department". No offers made to me by them at all, so I cancelled.

I got the wife to sign up a few days later, and got a Sky+HD box, multiroom, dish and all wired up for €49 and half price multiroom subscription for a year, go figure

Lol, thats pretty crazy. Considering all these new threads about FTA and Freesat popping up and ppl canceling their Sky service for these free services (after first initial investment) Sky should hold on to every customer for dear life.
Sometimes I really don't understand these companies. I even read they let ppl go without offering them any kind of deal and a few months later they send them a letter for 50% off their TV packages for a year but at that time a lot of ppl switched to FTA or Freesat and wouldn't consider that offer. Just insane.

As for me I am def. ok with the deal they offered me and its a win/win situation for both parties. I get a new sky+ hd box and install for E59 and they keep my monthly subscription fee. Thats how it should work.

I also think they will be forced eventually to drop the HD sub fee if FTA and Free-sat keeps adding HD channels for free. If I can remove the card and get the FTA HD channels for free if I ever get a HD Tv I will be more than happy.

As to my original question about what Sky HD box is the best if I have the choice I guess nobody really knows but I assume they are quie similar.

    Thanks for the replies.

At the moment the only HD box you will be offered is an AMSTRAD manufactured box, Sky purchased Amstrad about 2 yrs ago so are pushing their own development to be able to offer them more cheaply. There are holding back old stock for old tvs..

All FTA Hd channels can be added to the box, BBC HD and luxe Hd are on the EPG...the only one you need to add at present is ITV HD...You only pay for the HD back if u want the HD channels which are not FTA..

Thats not entirely true. You are just as likely to be supplied with a box from Samsung or Thomson. Two friends recently upgraded and both received the latest 500Gb Samsung box.

I am just concerned that they will give me one of those old Sky Hd+ receivers that only have 320Gb or so. Maybe i should ask them in advance so I won't get one of those old receivers.

You dont have a choice. Its whatever the installer has in the van on the day. Most people would notice no difference between them to be honest.
