Hi everyone, I need some help with how to go about choosing a career. I have a degree in English and History from 2006 and have been working in a shop since because i keep missing out on the HDip for teaching and am now starting to think I may not even want to do teaching. So basically what i'm asking is how do I go about deciding what career to get into. Are guidance counsellors any good etc.. Any help would be greatly appreciated because the place i'm working in right now is killing my soul not to be too dramatic :D

    Hi there,
I'm a Career Guidance Advisor with Paramounthr. I would suggest to try to narrow down your options try to complete some online testing. something like selfdirectedsearch, which will help you to come up with some kind of initial place to work from, following that you need to do some research ie. skills, experience etc... and then from there come up with an action plan.

you'll have lots options, and your experience from retail will stand to you.

    good luck

Google the Myers Briggs careers test, the test will give you an overall idea of where your strengths lie.

Are you passionate about English and History?
Did you see Teaching as a way to get a Job?
Have you now found that this isn't what you really want from Life?

Ask yourself what are you passionate about? What interests you?
Your Education will always be of use, but you may decide that you now want to be an Airline pilot? Only you can decide what you want.
Don't be afraid to leave the English and History behind you and find a new path.

It's never too late, it's only too late if you never try.

    Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could help me?
I have a Business Degree, am 24 years old and am still stuck in life! It seems all my friends are passing me out :(
As I said iv a Business Degree with not much interest in the area now. I want to either do a beauty therapy course (9months) or Primary School Teaching (3 - 4 years part time). But i dont know which one to choose.

I like the idea of the Beauty as Im good with my hands and with practical work and would love to own my own business. But by doing this course, I am completely abandoning my Business Degree which is a real shame, as I worked so hard to get it.

If I do the teaching its 4 long years (I have to repeat Irish and then do the Teaching course). But the good part of this is the nice holidays and class interaction and im using my degree.

I cant decide which one to choose. Iv weighted up the options, done the pros and cons list etc etc and im still stuck.

    Can anyone advise?

I dont want a job sitting in a boring office in front of a PC all day (which I am doing now).

Become a secondary school teacher. You would only need a one year Hdip. You can also become a business studies teacher so that would use your primary degree.

Surely having a business degree would be a bonus should you decide to open up your own beauty business. I think go for that if it's something you're really interested in. Don't be put off because it's far removed from what you do now. If you're don't have much interest in business now imagine how you could feel if you end up teaching it day in and day out for years!

Ya i think I would like the Beauty Therapy but If im going to do that, I dont think I want to work for someone. Id set up my own business. But then theres always the worry of the business failing!!! AGHHHHH its impossible to decide!

Has anyone been stuck in this position? Its seems such a shame to just forget about the degree.

O and I dont think Im cut out for a Secondary School teacher. I think they would rip me apart!!! (My boss makes my cry at work most days now, so imagine what I would be like in front of a class of mis-behaved teenagers!)

Does anyone else have any advice?

I really want to decide this summer, as time is passing me by :(

Thanks everyone for the advice so far.
