What to do with unwanted car?

    Hi all,

I come to you with a rather strange query, but knowing very little about cars I thought this was as good a place to go as any! For the last few months I have had my old car (an 00 Yaris with some body damage but perfectly drivable and passed NCT in current state) sitting at the side of my house unused by any of us.

My original plan was to leave it there until my brother could afford to get it insured and nct'd (NCT expired in March) but due to building work starting on the house soon we need to move it. We have nowhere else to put it for the time being so the decision has been made to just offload it.

What I was wondering is what is the best way to try and sell a car like this in todays market? Would I be best off going to a garage and seeing if they wanted it for parts? And what could one expect (if anything) to get for it? As i said earlier it still drives perfectly (or at least will when i put a new battery in!) and in a perect world i'd rather hold onto it until the younger brother can get it sorted.

Cheers, any advice will be much appreciated.

If you price it well it will sell, done deal is good for a car of that value private sale.

If I could sell my SD1 i would be interested as I'm looking for a cheap car for the summer to drive.

Oh well keep us posted but as others said, price it right and it should sell ok

Thanks for the replies folks. What would you suggest is the right price though?! As i said, I really am clueless when it comes to cars. Again, even a general figure would be helpful to get me started!

Thanks also for the site suggestion, will check out done deal (and adverts.ie) right now.

Not sure of the damage but trying to take it into account I'd reckon somewhere around €850

Yes but he was also taking a chance without NCT. It could of needed new CAT, tyres all round, shocks etc. and would of cost a couple of hundred to put through.

I'm not 100% on their value, its a guessing game without pictures of the damage. It could just be a dented wing or structural.

I would advertise it for €850 and take as close as you can get (€700-770)

Apologies Guil, I thought it had an NCT a few weeks ago. I didn't read it correctly.

I got to post on one forum at a time I'm getting confused between them all ;)

In that case I'd lower the price a lot from my original estimate.

    Use it to do this:

It'll be more fun than letting it sit there :D

    Try
    http://www.carzone.ie/
First step: Check out similar cars to yours and then price it along those lines, +/- whatever damage or conditions warrant.
Then stick it in there and see what happens.
Best put it on a few websites.
As for the price: Right now a 00 Yaris will sell at the same price as a 00 BMW 316i, and anything bigger will go for a song.
You have a small car, cheap to run, with NCT, you'll be surprised how much you can get for it.
If you had a 00 530i you'd have to pay people to drag it away.
If it's in reasonable condition and can be shined up to look nice I don't see why you shouldn't get at least 3k for it, more if it's in good nick with low mileage.

I know of a very good condition '02 530D with full service history with 172K miles that sold for €2K, came with 2 years NCT and 4 months tax

    Thanks again for replies,

Dr. Fuzzenstein, unfortunately it doesn't have NCT anymore, ran out in March, so I fear it's value has been greatly reduced and we really don't have the time to put it through the test. I'll have a scout around the websites and try and figure out the best course of action (and I'm not yet ruling out your idea, keith!)

    Cheers

Meant Petrol, though had a look through carzone and many ageing high powered beemers for sale at wildly optimistic prices, but a 99 2.4 petrol 5 series can be yours for around 3 grand, but I couldn't even afford a weeks tax and insurance for it, let alone hte petrol bill. ;)

You should consider putting it through the NCT and even putting 3 months tax on it.
I had a 99 Focus Diesel with dodgy suspension ,blowing exhaust, leaky doors, damp smelly carpet, but I got over E2k for it because it had nearly new NCT and 6 months tax, otherwise I would have to pay the scrappy to take it away.
People buy an NCT disk, the car comes for free with it.
