A friend of mine if thinking of changing from Sky to UPC. The only issue is they need subtitles. Is there a list of channels on UPC which have subtitles or do I need to go through them all?

I've searched here and the web but all I can find are people trying to turn them off. I've also been on the UPC site and couldn't find any info there.

    Thanks

If the person is heard of hearing i would stick to sky,the subtitle service is very hit and miss and on a select few channels only on upc.

As far as digital subtitles are concerned, there's no definitive list of channels that have them. However, all the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 owned channels do, as do some Sky, VMTV, and UKTV channels.

What doesn't have them however, are the Irish channels. However teletext is carried on some channels including the Irish channels and you can use this for subtitles the old fashioned 888 way. UPC branded boxes have built in teletext decoders in case your TV doesn't have teletext, NTL and Chorus boxes don't have this.

Our old Sagem Chorus box had a teletext decoder.

From the couple of times I tried subtitles, it is very hit and miss. I see on our new HD box there's an option in the settings for "audio description" now too but it is greyed out - I wonder if they will ever implement this?

There was subtitles available on all the Irish channels yesterday, bar TG4 but there were no English programmes on any time I checked. I've got the UPC HD+ box.

    Thanks for the replies folks.

I've gone through the channels myself and most of the 1xx have subtitltes, some of the 2xx had and then it was hit and miss from there.

I don't have sports or movies to check, but I doubt they would be getting them.

Only thing is I'm on MMDS so I don't if they have different set-ups for MMDS and cable.
