What kind of thanker are you?

I used to be a very picky thanker and only thanked if a post made me lol literally - some kind of actual noise had to emit; or if it was enough to make me stop and consider a point made. But, recently, I've been thanking posts that give me even just a little internal chuckle - those posts deserve thanks too I reckon!

So, what makes you thank a post. Or do you bother at all? Have you ever thanked out of pity or because you think it will make you look good to associate yourself with a post? Have you ever thanked to be controversial? Are there people in Boards that you thank because they're your friend or are you guilty of thanking a poster as a manner of flirting (I know of at cases of both of these!)?

What's more, I bet there are people out there who are thanking their socks off after the last Boards April Fools shenanigans. Not many people, but you'd be naive to think that there isn't at least one!

    Hey - thanks!

I thank just to get my name out there.

edit: I've given 500 thanks since the 15th March.. I'm easily impressed.

If I find a post helps me in any way possible, it gets a thanks from me.

Also if it makes me laugh it shall warrant a thanks.

I thank posts that make me laugh or that make a good point.

I love thanking, it gives me an enormous sense of well-being, I thank in the mornings, on Monday and on Wednesdays, sometimes on Tuesdays and maybe Fridays and the Weekend too.

I thank as much as I can, and as often as I can, I thank everyone I think deserves a thank, and hope they'll thank me too. Sometimes I'll thank based on how I'm feeling, what it contained or who the OP is.

    I love thanking....

    and innuendo.

    Posts which help
    Posts I agree with
    Posts I am amused by
I thank lots. If I don't thank a post, it's probably pretty inane.

There's another one. Do you thank loads of people in the hope that they will remember you and thank you back? Christ - is there a thanks Mafia??

I thought this would be fairly simple to begin with, but I think thanks are a lot more organised than I realised.

Oh God yes, we organise massive thanking sessions in which we thank so much we literally explode with thanks!

Explosion happens site-wide, you can spot our names under people, it's where we're most effective at producing our produce ;)

The thanks button is a good thing, but sometimes a bunch of tossers will use it to all agree with eachother, to gang up on a poster. They are showing you they are forming a group, to sort you out. These people normally haven't a fcuking clue what they are talking about, lack the congnitive capacity to comprehend the subject matter. Their opinions are normally wrong ;) :pac:

You can't do it until you've made ten posts.

When you've made ten posts - come back and thank me.

It's the people who consistently thank all moderators posts you've gotta keep an eye on!:p

That's why it's interesting. The thanks button is used for more than just saying thanks.

I don't know why they added a thumbs-up to bypass the need for posts saying +1/lol/thanks, when they didn't add a thumbs-down to bypass the need for posts saying you are a muppet/groan/I disagree. Wouldn't these kinds of posts be better ones to do away with?

Because when someone disagree's it means a debate starts, and so gets active topics and an active community.

I thank lots of posts & get a lot of thanks too... it's nice to be nice & nice to be thanked.

I find that the only people who bandy about terms such as "thanks whore" are generally posters who are not funny, helpful or insightful in any way whatsoever, but instead constantly post stupid jokes in the vain hope that they will garner thanks & end up bitter because they don't.

I just thank posts I like, simples. It can be used to be petty all right - that's pretty obvious, but other than that, all this talk of widespread "thanks-whoring" and people thanking posts just because they're mods or their friends or "popular" members, is just paranoia.

    100% agree.
I thank someone regardless if they are a mod or not.
Its usually if I agree with them, like their points - even if I disagree with them - for they are well explained or they just make me laugh.

Untrue - the evidence is there in black and white - and blue.

It sure isn't. Especially about the mods getting thanked for absolutely no reason what so ever.

    Thanks whoring is quite common.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

And the talk of circle-jerking and back-slapping - in the vast majority of cases it's most likely to be a simple case of clicking a button to indicate approval of a post, no more thinking about it. It's the people who have such an issue with the thanks system that are doing all the analysing.
