i am wondering if anyone knows why my portable external hard has 2 usb connections on it which i thought it needed for my computer to recognise it but if i just use one of the connections my computer picks it up fine. anyone got any ideas??

If you mean that the usb cable has two plugs at one end it's because some USB ports dont supply enough current to run some drives. Using two ports increases the available current!

Your external drive probably has no power supply so it is getting all its power from the USB connectors. USB provides 5 Volts and 1 Amp max, i.e. 5 Watts max. If the drive needs more than that they simply add another USB connector. (Not all USB ports can provide 1A either - some unpowered USB hubs for example don't do this.)
