    Hi lads,

Do any of you know if there is anywhere in Cork to rent road bikes (preferably decent) from?

    Cheers.

Thanks masadjie. I know of them and I've sent them an inquiry. Hopefully they'll get back to me with information as to where road bikes can be rented.

Is a hybrid not a road bike ? Flat handle barred racer sort of a thing ?

There's no exact distinction for Hybrids. They're just a cross over between bike types. However, they tend to be more like mountain bikes but with larger circumferenced but narrower wheels and tyres (similar to that of a road bike). Other components tend to vary from that of a typical mountain bike also.

What I'm looking for is strictly a road bike with drop handle bars. It's for a friend who'll be cycling with myself and another over 80+km x2. Any other bike type and he wouldn't be able to keep up.

I had a brief response to my enquiry from Rothar Cycles so I should be finding out shortly.

Cheers for that RJ. I'm not in a hurry so his laid-backness shouldn't be a worry. Always a pleasure to deal with a nice and helpful chap.

No harm in that, a bicycle mechainic isn't too hard a job to master, an average mechanically minded teenager would be up to speed on puncture repairs, ball bearing, bottom bracket repairs etc in a few afternoons. Once he coughed up what he agreed to pay you all's well :)

Fascinating. Does anyone know what happened to the chap at the bottom of Shandon Street (who used to rent out bikes) also called Aidan. Are they one and the same or are all Aidans laid back?:pac:

Different dude, his shop was called "The bike shop" iirc, I bought my first bike off him (well actually my Dad bought my first bike off him for me). What's fascinating btw ?

Sold the shop in 2008 or so. at the right time from a property value point of view.

They got back to me. Quoted me €40 per day for a road bike. Seemed a little steep although the spec of the bike was not mentioned. Was told that the 56cm bike they were offering would be suitable for my 6'4'' friend. There's little chance of that so I was a little miffed with this misinformation.

Very established place in Ballincollig: Westend Cycles, West Village - seems to have been there forever...

Do they do rentals? I'll look 'em up and give them a buzz tomorrow. Rothar Cycles had said that they didn't know of anyone else renting bikes besides themselves in Cork.

Oh yeah, maybe they don't do rentals (just assuming here) but give them a shout anyway...

Just the pleasant way this thread has meandered really. Bought a bike from the Aidan (the bottom of Shandon Street one), quite a character. Think he may have gone to Italy.

See what I mean about de bobs! Heard of somebody buying an ex rental bike from him a few years ago. Asked him to throw in a water bottle for free, he refused. Penny wise pound foolish as the individual in question has not bought from him since.

Aidan Looney was the guy at the end of Shandon Street, got my first bike from them, a President, rode it home as didn't want to take it apart to put in the back of the car.

Noel Holmes is the guy in Westend Cycles, doesn't do rentals IIRC but worth the call, even if just for info. An Rothar saying a 54cm would suit a 6'4" person is to put it mildly, a joke, but then again they can only really accommodate the average punter when buying in rental bikes.
