There are so many great excursions you can go on if you go to Munich. You could go to Salzburg, Innsbruck, Nuremberg or even up the Alps to Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze. Train fares are very cheap with a ticket called the Bayern-Ticket, which allows unlimited travel on Bavarian regional trains for a day for up to 5 people travelling together for only €28! It also allows you to go out to Salzburg, despite it being in Austria.

Excellent value I know, it also covers public transport in Munich and Nuremberg. You can buy it from a ticket machine on the day (look for Bavaria-Ticket).

If you decide to stay in Munich for the day a travelcard for I think up to 4 adults only costs €9.

More info about the train ticket is at http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/prices/germany/laender-ticket.shtml. Click on "Bavaria".

Lifelike's sugestion for a "Bayern Ticket" is super.

    http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/prices/germany/laender-ticket.shtml

    Here are its limitations.
It is only valid in local trains (Nahverkehr). These are RE Regional express, RB Regional Bahn ( Bahn= Railway), Buses in many towns, U-Bahn (underground), S-Bahn (Schnellbahn=rapid local railway to satellite towns) and Strassenbahn=trams in Munich.
It is not valid for IC, EC, ICE (Intercity Express) and RJ (Railjet).

It is valid Monday to Friday after 9 AM until 3AM on the next day.
Bayern ticket costs 20€ for a single, 27 € for a group of 5 persons, plus one's own children up to 15 years.

On Saturday and Sunday: "Schönes Wochenende" = Happy Weekend Ticket. This is valid from midnight for 27 hours, i.e. 3 am on following day.
It is also confined to local trains. http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/prices/germany/schoenes_wochenende_ticket.shtml

These regional trains are fine. One can vew the towns and villages better. These tickets are very popular in Germany, especially during the school holidays.

Example: Munich-Salzburg Return on 9th June with Bayern Ticket.
    MUC 09:42 SZG RE 11:42 120 Minutes
    SZG 20:12 MUC RE 22:17
These are the respective main stations.

    With IC and EC
    MUC 08:27 SZG EC 10:09 102 Minutes
    SZG 19:51 MUC EC 21:33
    Standard fare 58€.
The web page shows a special offer of 30€ for this choice of trains.
This is for the "Freizeitkaret" = leisure time ticket.

    http://www.bahn.de/p/view/angebot/preis/freizeit/muenchen-salzburg.shtml
2nd class on daily IC and EC trains, not valid on Fridays.
Return journey begins at the latest on 3AM of the following day.
    Online costs 30€.

Places to visit in Munich and its area.

In Munich- Marienplatz und Rathaus, the Marian Square, Munich's main square and city hall.
    - Frauenkirche (women's church ). From one tower there is a panorama of Munich
    - Nymphenburg Park, Englisher Garten
    - BMW Auto Museum, Deutsches Museum
    - Olympic Park

In Munich's S-Bahn area (rapid local railway )
    See=Lake: Starnberger See, Ammersee ( Herrsching )

    Further out:
    - Die Schlösser (castes) are Schloss Neuschwanstein, Linderhof und Herrenchiemsee.
    - Monasteries and churches: Wieskirche bei Steingaden, Kloster Ettal, Benidiktbeuren

There are two main Bus Stations, one near the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) and Fröttmaning in Munich North, accessible with the U6 underground and A9 Autobahn. The football arena is in Fröttmaning.
For these Castles travel agents (Reisebüro) offer guided tours in buses.

Hotels and B/B in the S-Bahn area are good value. Towns: Tutzing, Dachau, Geltendorf, Nannhofen und Petershausen and many more.
(Hotels in Freising and Erding are not mentioned, they're near the Airport).
    Guesthouse=Pension, B/B = ÜF Übernachtung mit Frühstück
    übernacht=overnight, Frühstück=breakfast. Zimmer = room, Bett= bed.

I was there a few years ago and it's one place that I keep meaning to go back to. The drink and food around the city is great - the Englischer Garten and Hoffbrauhaus.

2 excursions that I found worthwhile were Neuschwanstein and Dachau. Neuschwanstein is in a beautiful mountain setting but not much else to do if you're on a bus/train trip. Dachau speaks for itself.

Will go to Dachau & Salzburg and maybe bike tour.

Would I do both Neuscwanstein & Nymphenburg Castles?

Dachau is on the S2 S-Bahn. From Hauptbahnhof /main station 21 minutes.
RB and RE trains to Treuchtlingen also stop in Dachau. Time :11 Minutes.

Information about Salzburg has been already posted.

Neuschwanstein is super. It is located 140 km from Munich. One should arrive early. Many buses are parked at 9 AM. It's a good walk to the ticket desk. Then it's steep uphill to the castle entrance. Sometimes it's a thirty minutes wait for entry.

    How to get there
    - ask in a Reisebüro /travel agency if they do a tour.
    - ask at the ZOB (Zentral Omnibus) Bus Terminus near the main statin.
    - ask someone in Munich to drive you there. Benzingeld= petrol money.
    - the nearest railway station to Neuschwanstein is 87629 Füssen. Bus to Schwangau/Hohenschwangau.

-Nymphenburg Palace is also called a "Schloss" in German. It is more a palace than a castle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymphenburg_Palace
It is also worth visiting. It has a park with a botanical garden.
It's located in the urban area of Munich.
The nearest tram stop / Straßenbahn Haltestelle is Romanplatz.

    Partial quote:

Small correction. This ZOB Zentral Omnibus = Central Bus Station is by the S-Bahn station Hackerbrücke. Coming in from the West it's the stop before Hauptbahnhof (main station).

Some info about transport from Munich Airport. There is no main line rail.
It is served by the two S-Bahns S1 and S8. They have each have a 20 minute
frequency, that is a train to Munich every 10 minutes. Both serve the Marienplatz and the main station (Hackerbrücke also).
Tickets are available from Automats (self service kiosks) in the Zentralbereich (central area). The S-Bahn station is underneath. The information desk and the Deutsche Bahn (German Railway) desk are also there.

There is also a Lufthansa Bus to the Hauptbahnhof. All passengers can use it. It leaves outside of arrivals in Terminal 2. It costs 10:50 Euro and takes the Autobahn. [Aer Lingus fly into Terminal 1]. With this bus you'll have a first hand experience of a German Autobahn. Autos drive at 200 km/hour plus. 21 Km of the motorway is four lanes (per carriage). Traffic volume is 144 400 Autos per day. http://www.abdsb.bayern.de/zahlen. Traffic jams of 30 km in length have happened.

The S1 S-Bahn from Munich TO the airport divides at Neufahrn. One part goes to Freising and the second part to the airport. Always watch out for the announcements.

At what time of day does the plane land? This question is about which ticket to purchase.

    hi,

as day trips go -Dachau is ok - a large hall with an exhibition but you need to get a train and then a bus to it.
A great day trip would be to garmisch-partenkirchen on the train. super small town with the large mountain ranges beside you -which you can use the cable cars to go up.
In munich there's also the royal pallace - not sure of location - which is very interesting too.

and all the above. great city indeed.
bring the swimming trunks - and go for a swim in the Olympic pool and jump off the top board of the diving platform - 25/30m high - scary stuff :D

    enjoy.

    when are you going ??
