What? I taught they were the usual exam booklets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭clo4cb

That's what people have been saying! I don't know! And i have big writing so I need to write more than 3/4 A4 page for 15 marks, etc.!!!!!

ya and the usual exam booklets are more spaced out than in normal A4 refil pads aren't they?

    What have I started?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,840 ✭✭✭Luno

Eh? I don't really think they go by the whole page thing it's how many words like if you do massive writing and take up four pages they're hardly going to compare it to a person with smaller writing, I doubt it matters!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,218 ✭✭✭padocon

    What about the paper?

Our teacher told us that we shouldn't make one up as it just makes things more difficult for ourselves and the examiner. I'm not sure though if you'd lose marks or anything?

I don't have a scanner but the basic story lines are kind've depressing :pac: I find it almost impossible to write happy essays...am well one of my essays is about a jewish woman and her kids hiding out after her husband has been killed by Nazi's, she eventually gets captured.

Another is told from the perspective of a boy whos been kidnapped by a scientist who has been kidnapping people in an area to cure common diseases. The police cannot figure out who or what the motive is because the people kidnapped range in personalities/age i.e old man to cure Alzheimers, teenager to cure acne etc. Just really about a scientist who's angry his "talents" haven't been recognized.

Another is about a broken family who the father takes the child because the mother wants to take him. . .blah blah blah (not a happy ending) :D

The above material is copyrighted so don't even think about it :pac:

    GUYS. Personal Writing is easy.
The key to succeeding in personal writing is actually quite simple.
Make a short story, as depressing as possible.

Here's a quick example. A German immigrant to London loses his job in the midst of the global economic recession, fails to keep his home, struggles to survive on the streets for a few days and eventually commits suicide. Make it more depressing? Tell it out in first-person diary entries spanning the course of three weeks.

WHY DOES THIS WORK? Quite simple. By giving yourself a situation like this, the actual plot is fairly advanced and realistic, but also gives the character a emotional dilemma that you can express. Once your story has emotion, your expression picks up.. The thing is this: if you write something like that and everyone else is writing a faceless, emotionless story about being stuck in an airport, you've gained the interest of the examiner.

My teacher is brilliant, she told us actually how to write an essay etc on anything (poetry, personal writing etc). I have a few now of mine that are good.
Make it on your own experience. It's so much easier than making up something. It's also harder.
Give your characters the traits of people you know eg. if you have a friend in your essay, use everything of a person you know in your essay.
Give clear, vivid descriptions of everything.
Use techniques such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphors, similes etc. These all really improve an essay.
Vary your vocab (this goes for all sections). Have a list of adjectives for both positive and negative traits you can use.
Make it as enticing as possible. Don't give too mcuh away in the first paragraph. Opening sentence short be short and direct.
Give as much detail, ie. if it's a day you'll never forget, you're going to remember the date, place, atmosphere etc.

I'll try post more if I get on later.
