Getting a website started

I am planning on setting up a website of the type that matches people with different resources.. (like the way eBay matches buyers and sellers or expertsexchange, etc)...

    My question though is this:
How do these kinds of sites get started? Like no one would bother selling their stuff on eBay if it didn't already have a large population of buyers or vice versa, so how would they get their first big installment of members?

    Any ideas? Thanks

EDIT, just realised I probably posted this in the wrong place... but I can't figure out how to delete a post! mods feel free to delete this one
