Just wondering what the average price would be to get a car serviced all parts supplied by me and also need brake pads changed which will also be supplied by me.

The real cost of the service is the labour. You will save some money supplying parts as long as you find someone who will allow it but the labour is the real cost.

How long is a piece of string?

What a daft question. Ask the garage or mechanic?

he asked for an average price, not a specific price.

Something I wondered about as I do a lot of work myself, what do indy mechanics actually charge for parts? They get the parts cheaper than retail prices, but charge more than retail plus labour. Is that about right? Or is very little made on parts and its the labour where they make the most money?

The labour rate at an indy is prbably aorund €50 an hour. Dealers probably wouldn't let you supply your own parts. You could probably do some deal with a local mechanic.

What did someone here put it down as a while back? Its like bringing your own food to a restaurant and getting the chiefs there to cook it.
Some mechanics won't like it, I remember I serviced a lads car and he got the parts for a full service, the only correct part was the oil filter, wasted my time:rolleyes:

Like what Plug said. But if you have a mechanically minded friend

a basic service is not that hard at all.

Right parts and take your time.

Go easy lads. It really depends on how much work is involved, this will vary according to the car and service.

Not unless they're completely desperate for money.

    Why don't you ask a 2nd garage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭crosshair1

I'm beginning to see a trend on these forums and others where people are willing to give help (myself included) but fail to realise that OPs have to be able to help themselves to some extent.
In this case as its after midnight it will probably take 1/2 an hour to compose and post this reply, during working hours I charge €50 including VAT for my services hourly.
Then the OP would like to have the answer for free to a question that would have cost maybe 20c and 2mins of his time to find locally over the phone.
Can i also add that In my case I will fit customers parts and oils to their vehicles and quote accordingly. It does raise eyebrows however when I write on invoice "parts supplied by customer limited labour warranty only"
    Regards

Cost me €100 for a full service including front pads fitted. Supplied all filters, oil and pads myself.

This is a forum where people can ask questions isn't it?

I'm sure Mr Garage wouldn't like me ringing him up at 01.00 on a Friday night asking how much for a service.

Thanks for the help was told 150 getting it done for 60 now.

You said you where looking for a 2nd opinion, I'd assumed you'd already asked 1 garage and were posting here to see if you where being over charged.

You could have called a 2nd garage after getting the 1st quote and got an answer quicker and much more accurate then from random people on the internet.

But since it was just a general question sorry.

As far as I know, where I work only charges €30 an hour. An independant garage that just repairs cars! The only problem with supplying your own parts is that if they're wrong you could end up paying more for labour while it's taking up a lift. If the garage gets the wrong parts, it's their problem.

Buy a Haynes manual and some axle stands and do the service yourself. It's not that difficult.

    They charge retail for them.

OP what make/model/year car is it, €60 is very reasonable.
There is nothing to stop an ordinary "joe soap" doing his own servicing, tbh If I wasnt in this trade I would try do my own work anyways
The problem is the knowledge/investment required to do certain aspects of the work, in a lot of cases a diagnostic interface is needed to reset service intervals or address a fault lamp. For my business the approach I have is to include all costs in my labour rate. If an existing customer is in for a service and requires any diagnostic work this is not charged as an extra, only as time. However if "fred in the shed" comes to me for a "plug in" because his regular mechanic said that I have the computer then its €40 inc Vat.
The bottom line is find somebody that you can trust, If they charge you €150 for a complete service and you are happy that its been done properly then so be it. Its a buyers/consumers market at the minute so there is no reason to be tied to any repairers.
BTW the customer should usually make a saving on the retail price of part due to the 2/3 vat rule when the cost of parts are less than 2/3 of the cost of service then 13.5% is applied

are you looking for a nixer done or a garage who have to pay vat, wages, rates , lecky, subs, waste disposal, on top of rent/mortgage and give you a warranty?
BTW most garages will sell you parts at retail price + vat at 13.5% whereas you buy them at retail + 21% so having them supplied by garage should be cheaper.

Fyi If some one arrives at my shop with there own parts the labour is worked out at 1.4 times the rate if we supply parts. these figures have been worked out by my financial boffins and are a just increase not extortion.
