Focus ???

    What rpm's does a :
    1.6 Focus do at 100 kmh/ 62.5 mph in fifth gear ?
    and a
    1.4 Focus do at 100 kmh/62.5 mph in fifth gear ?

    and does anyone know the bhp's in these engines? and which would be more efficient if you were at mototrway speeds

    It's pretty ovbious that the smaller engine has to work harder to move the car around, meaning it will use more fuel.

    My 1.4 does 2300rpm @100kph in 5th gear, the mighty 74bhp. Buy the 1.6 though. :cool:

    Not really true that...unless you are talking instantaneous fuel economy at selected times when you're driving, but in terms of 'real world' total miles covered for the cash you put in at the pump, I've never got more economy out of a 1.6 than a 1.4 in the same car...you have to take your entire drive cycle into account, sticking in a 2.0l engine wont use less fuel than the 1.6 unless you fill up at a motorway petrol station and run the tank solidly to the next motorway station without encountering traffic etc.

    I'd go 1.6 in the Focus...the 1.4 does not provide enough acceleration without seeming laboured in my opinion, and I've lived with both models

    it all depends on the size of the car,
    a small engine in a heavy car will cause you to have the throttle open alot more than an engine that is a more suitable size for the car, in some cases yes a 1.6 will be more economical due to the driver being able to be more leaniant(spelled wrong) with the throttle to get going as the engine has more power over the smaller one

    true enough in certain circumstances and a smaller engine has to compensate a bit more for the same road load. but fuel maps have quite a few parameters going into them, not just throttle position and to keep roughly the same air fuel mix, the more air going in (dependent on the capacity of the engine), means the more fuel generally ends up going in too. its one of those ones where it seems to make sense that the 1.6 can be more economical in certain circumstances, but I've always found that the real proof comes when you see how many miles you've done when it comes to a fill. And having done similar journeys (mainly motorway, but mix of town traffic), I always got more out of the 1.4 than the 1.6. Not a big enough difference for me to prefer the 1.4 to be fair, as the pullaway performance was noticeably less capable.
