My 01 Avensis has been in the garage for a while as the only available replacement engine is a 2007 one costing 1500 which is the price of the car in solid condition.
The mechanic has said he can just replace the block - can some one tell me what this means?

    Thanks

The early VVTi engines in the Avensis and Corolla had problems where they consume excessive oil. Toyota replaced the engine or cylinder block on any effected car at the time but didn't offically issue a recall as it didn't effect all cars.

This is the cylinder block of an engine:

It's supposed to be done for free, so it's either already been done, in which case, it will cost a bit, or the mechanic is trying to rob ya. :) Is it a Toyota garage?

Toyota only replaced blocks on cars that were experiencing excessive oil consumption. Not every car was experiencing this problem so it wasn't an offical recall and I'd doubt Toyota will replace it now on a 9 years old car for free.

The OP hasn't stated why the engine is gone and after 9 years I doubt it's because of a factory oil consumption issue.

    What happened to it OP?

It was overdue a service and I had'nt put any oil in (had it 9 months) . So I think it was an oil issue but I have to accept responsibility for leaving it too late.

Is it much easier / cheaper to replace a block than an engine?

Surely it's harder to replace the block as all the bits have to come off the old engine and onto the new block. An engine swap is almost plug & play.

I could have got it done about 6 months ago on a 01 avensis too, except that it had already been done. Got it checked in a toyota garage, so they are still doing it. All the engines burn a little bit of oil anyway, so they will replace it, plus it won't do any harm, since it's free. The garages won't complain, it's kept a lot of mechanics in work over the years.
