I only got into pidgeon decoying last year and was wondering - will they follow the same flight-paths this year or do they change each season?

On a permission i have they generally fly the same path every year, over an ash tree. The crows go by the telephone poles. However a few years back they used to come up the centre of the field which they rarely do anymore. Best to scope the area out first. I always do anyway.

I think it all depends on the wind...there not stupid....if there is a good feed in the field your shooting they will come...as they do...but the wind dictates the line of flight they take me thinks......
Im not mad into bird shootn but ive done a good bit in my time...
set your decoys with the wind at your back as the pidgies like to land into the wind...

    boom boom yum yum...

flights paths are dictated by a few things .

most importantly the feed area ,the direction from nite roosting and mid day roosting .
pigeon will not feed all day especially in late summer/autumn they will sit up in the shade .
so from the morning flight to the afternoon flight patterns might change .wind plays a key roll when setting up a hide ,if your not hear a flight path pigeon might not fly against the wind to get to you.

it all depends on what they are feeding on ,where the roost is,water supply, wind direction, etc :rolleyes:

thanks for the replies. one thing we noticed was that there were 'dead zones' where nothing would fly. these could be one field over, or even 200yds up the ditch. suppose the best would be to see on the day.

Better option would be to observe the flight paths a day or two before the actual shooting day, if at all possible!
Then there's no messing when you go to decoy a spot, since you'll already know exactly where your gonna be setting up!;)

    Birds are creatures of habit.
Do your homework and don't over shoot the sweet spot.

    Volcanic eruptions aside. :D:D
