Hi thanks for your help. It was a BBC NI/RTE co production. I've contacted both RTE and BBC about it. RTE have the tapes but cant release any because the BBC have the majority say over it. So i contacted the BBC and they point blank refuse to give any copies of it and wouldnt even say why. There must be some kind of politics over this between them. So i'm frustrated to say the least!!! That clip on youtube is the only one you can seem to get online.

Your prob better off getting in touch with one of the actors or Roddy Doyle who all prob have copies.

BBC NI/RTÉ and most producers of drama always have issues surrounding rights, music, actors etc etc and royalties, I am not sure how it works but RTÉ have only ever repeated this show once back in 1997. They rarely repeat their other dramas for the same reason. It is a pity that they can't it would be nice to see some more repeat of some of their better dramas, I don't think RTÉ have repeated Batchelor's Walk since its first run.

Found a discussion about it here (albeit from 2008)....

Maybe the Irish Film Institute would be of use.

I believe Doyle published a novel featuring the wife of the family [played in the series by Ger Ryan, I think. Called, 'the woman who kept bumping into doors' , sometime later. Haven't read it, so can't say if it's a book of the series plot or not.

The Woman Who Walked into Doors.

It was also produced as a play.

I haven't read or seen it, but from reviews I believe it is a prequel, and shows Paula and Charlo meeting for the first time.

I seee now, Elmo. Thanks. I read a couple of Doyle's books but preferred those of his fellow Dubliner, Dermot Bolger, [Emily's Shoes, The Journey Home etc]

Theres also a sequel to "The Woman Who Walked Into Doors". It's simply called "Paula Spencer". Both books are well worth a read and easily available on Amazon. If you're old fashioned I'm sure they're "in all good bookshops" as well.:)

Edit: "The Woman Who Walked Into Doors" is set after the events depicted in "Family" but in it Paula looks back at her early life including meeting Charlo.

Explosive, controversial and up there with the most thought provoking dramas
ever produced/shown on Irish television. Every taboo in Irish society apart from clerical abuse was laid bare and nothing in my mind has come close to it since.

It was 'of it's time' and I don;t know if it would have the same impact today
but it was one of the few bits of art that I have seen that I still think about from time to time.

    It was brilliant.

Was it really necessary to take the link down? The OP more than likely did not see it.

"Family" is 17 years old. The charter should only relate to current shows or those available on dvd.

Links to programmes that are unavailable in any format should be permitted. Just a suggestion...

Remember seeing it and thought it was brilliant. I do remember rights issues, basically the bbc can only show it once every five years or something.

CH I seem to remember a Belfast based series co produced with RTE I think, called 'Eureka' and based on a novel by a well known N Irish writer.
I don't think BBC NI have repeated that either since it first aired a bout ten years ago.

Eureka Street. Around 1998 I think???

RTÉ really need to start repeating their Dramas. I think the repeated the Family once about 2 years later.

    It's not illegal, it's just frowned upon!!:p

gannonp reappears every few months to bump this thread and sell these..

.. and it's not the first time I've had to remove these posts from him / her.

I've given him / her a ban for 2 weeks. I'd be tempted to give any of ye asking to buy a copy an infraction.

They aren't on sale on DVD.. but it doesn't mean gannonp has permission from RTÉ / BBC to sell pirate copies.

I have one of the episodes on VHS only found it recently, its the one with Charlo's wife. The quality is very flakey as its been unused since probably 1994.
