    (Video in link above.)

Right, problems: The video doesn't have anything to do with mc Donald's or the food in it... only the old guy bringing the food to the table

Before this ad, were homosexual people not allowed in ?

I mean this ad is pointless.

if it was like one mother and about 10 children running around the place then it would probably make more sense cos the kids could sit down and be happy about the food their getting but they did this ?

    :pac::pac::pac::pac::pac:

    Its quite ironic.

His old man is telling he could be getting all the burger in his class while eating a burger.

Surely that ad is somewhat contradicting itself though. The reveal at the end is that the kid is gay. But the father and son don't discuss this, so it's hidden.

    so..

"Come as you are, but keep your gayness a secret"

    Can't think of a gay person/mc'donalds joke.

This will have to do; gay people/mc'donalds related joke.

    Is that ok?

You'd think a better ending to the advert would be the son coming out to his father in McDonalds and his father accepting it.

the buzzy clip is the first ad from McDonald's to feature a gay character

not quite sure about that, have you ever seen the adverts with this guy in them:

It's a bit silly. The tagline says 'Come as You Are' But the chap is obviously not 'out' yet.

Unless, he isn't gay and just misses his mate in a non gay way.

    Edit: What brokenlaptop said.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

the ad is just one in a series that aims to "recognise the diversity of McDonald's customers in France".

Well, yeah. Every demographic has cash to part with. A load of pandering nonsense, tbh.

It's going green in a lot of countries. New improved eco-friendly Mickey D's.

With the crunch climate change summit in Copenhagen fast approaching, even McDonalds has decided to go green — at least with its logo, a senior executive said on Monday.
At German branches of the US fast-food chain, the famous golden arches will be emblazoned on a green background, rather than its usual red, McDonalds Germany vice-president Holger Beeck said.
The change will be made on all new and refitted restaurants “out of respect for the environment,” Beeck told the Financial Times Deutschland.

Coming soon to a Mickey D's near you.

A counterpoint to the BK Flamer?

The reason the kid in the ad is being so coy and quiet is because the dad bought him a Big Mac when he secretly wanted to get his gob around an Angus.

    Erm....what the hell?

I really don't get this. Is it only now that gay people are accepted at McDonalds? Or are they just encouraging young men to keep their sexuality a secret? Because coming out to your father is obviously a big mistake. Can't have teh gheys being open and honest about themselves.

WindSock summed it up perfectly; "a load of pandering nonsense". And as for the slogan "Come as you are" - seriously, as someone who is LGB I find that quite patronising.

tl;dr version - McDonalds can fcuk off.

Does McDonalds really need to have an ad like this or is it a ground breaking milestone for the gay community?

What to MacDonalds and a homosexual man have in common?
They both like to hide the meat.

Dumb thread, dumb responses. Loads of ads don't directly flaunt the product they're selling, but rather try to connect to viewers by using themes or stories. Why can't people just appreciate the ad for what it is and not over analyze it to death just because it's "GAY"? Bloody hell, the sexual innuendos just come out of nowhere, get a grip people! There have probably been McDonald's ads in the past that have resonated with everyone in some way, now this ad targets gay people, their families and their friends. It's really not a complicated ad, just because the teenager is in the closet at that time, it doesn't diminish the "come as you are" slogan - which if anything, is like an encouragement more than anything else. It pisses me off the way some morons feel the need to crudely sexualize gay people. Would you rather gay people aren't acknowledged in advertising, like the "good ol' days"? That's not just ignorant, it's bad business.

I think this article sums up the issue pretty well:

To be fair, every other McDonalds ad I've ever seen was a load of overthought, committee-generated pandering crap as well.

Maybe the dad is a sekret ghey and the kid knows and his sneering when he talks about how he used to be such a ladies man.

The best bit was where he was gay

Was he? The way I read it was he was speaking to his muslim team mates Mother from thier old school days. That's why he was staring at the photo.

His Dad, a former French special forces agent had just retired that week. Hence the celebratory trip to McDonalds {the COS don't pay too well}.

The night before his Dad sat down with him and, full of cheap French wine, spoke of his time fighting for France. Eventually he broke down in tears and spoke about the time, two years ago, before he was taken out of the field, when he was asked to lead a mission on French soil against French citizens. The reason he couldn't in good conscience fight anymore.

He knew it was wrong, but orders are orders. They raided a house in the suburbs, his own locality if you can believe it. They went in heavy, he was first through the door, he saw him. He had a gun......the training kicked in. "Don't doubt yourself. If their is any doubt, put them down" that's what he was trained to do. So he saw the enemy, he saw what was in his hand.....and he put him down. Only after the dust settled and his ears stopped ringing did he see the enemies face. Jean-Pierre......My sons friend, his team mate.

After two years of carrying that with himself, he told the only one he could. He told his son, the one who the death effected closest to him. He made him swear never to speak of it again. Then he reminded him they were to go to McDonalds tomorow to celebrate that he was out of it. Done for good. Washing his hands of the whole thing. Then he scribbled something on the back of his packet of ciggerettes and walked out of the room.

Jean-Pierre's number......Only not his anymore, only his Mother lived in that house now.

And that gibberish probably makes just about as much sense as whatever the intention of McDonalds marketing department had in mind.

all those complaining that the ad is pointless, are you forgetting it's an advert for McDonalds? It'a hardly going to be a Kirosawa epic of cinematography.

But then again it has you talking about the advert and the company, so it works.

i'd rather a persons sexuality wasnt used in advertising at all. it is, or should be at least, their own private business.
