Emergency Tax Back - been almost 3 months

Three months I'm in this job and every week 42% of my wages go to the revenue.

I really need some advice on this. Also, if anyone has worked in a HR department before and could tell me how companies work with this kind of thing or if its normal, that would be great.

Basically, when I first started working there they wanted my PPS number. I'm a full Irish citizen etc... and I thought the norm was to just bring it in written down etc.... but they wanted proof.

As I had no P45 (no previous PAYE employment - first job this is) I eventually brought in a letter which has my PPS on it and she said that would be fine;. So I then expected my tax to go down to the second emergency tax rate of 21% until I got my 12A form (tax credits) sorted. It didnt. My PPS number isnt even on my payslip yet.

After a while, the Revenue eventually sent out my tax credits cert to both me and my job. I recieved it in the post three weeks ago. And still, as I checked my bank balance, 42% of my wages is being taken and no sign of my refund.

    Is this normal?

I work for a supermarket (not sure if I can mention the name but its probably the biggest in Ireland and the UK). At the minute I feel like my tax credit cert is sitting on a dusty desk in an office somewhere and is just being forgotten about.

Tried talking to my manager - but its like talking to a brick wall.

Is his kind of waiting normal? Do jobs wait till the end of the month or something?

I know who you work for, saw you mention them in another thread and me and my siblings have all worked for them too, most with a similar issue.

Usually there is someone in charge of payroll there and they are the person you need to be talking to (get your union rep to help with this) and get it sorted. Bring the tax credits cert in with you to work to make sure it gets noticed.

It does take some time with this crowd, my brother was working almost a year before it got sorted but he did get a nice payback when the tax was all sorted :D

Thanks for the reply. The thing is that all the 'back office' managers are getting reshuffled and moved around so nobody knows whos who. I'm gonna ask my manager on Monday.

I cant wait for a year ... I have to pay rent etc... and its starting to weigh down on me.

Most other jobs seem to get all this sorted in a flash

hmmmm well in the branch I used to work in, there was two staff, just bog standard, not managers, who helped with payroll. If there is something similar in your branch, thats a good place to start as they won't be reshuffled like the managers

Hmmm.... you might be able to help me here.

Are they cash office workers wo deal with the payroll? OR just staff plucked off the floor ...

I'm trying to figure out who to talk to because at the minute I feel like I'm in a very very slow game of pass the parcel and keep being told to wait "another week" and see if it comes through.

In past experience they were checkout girls who doubled up as payroll. We used to have to go in to get our payslips off them. But they have the inside ear of finance section so if they exist in your branch, they should be your new best friends :)

Righto - just got off the phone with the Revenue. For the THIRD time.

She says that the tax credit certificate was issued on the 26th - over a month after I first sent in the 12A.

I was paid on the 28th, which was a friday. Because I work a back week I wouldnt have expected it to be in that payment.

But surely it should have been in there today? Or am I just being impatient? Is it normal for it to take maybe till next week or the week after?

If the tax credits certificate has been issued, then you need to follow up with the payroll department and make sure that they enter the data into the system.

Forget managers! Try asking some of your more experience colleagues how things really work, and who you need to talk to.
