What do i do with car? Scrap it?

Ok i have a 98 fiesta which is driving ok. It has 105,000 miles on the clock. So not sure, how long more it can take? A few small problems. Probably the biggest problem is the handbrake is broken. And i think there might be a very very small oil leak, i dont know. Seem to be topping up more than when i first got it - though im driving it more. I also learned how to drive in it, so there are quite a few scratches on it and the body isn't the best.

I don't need a lecture but the NCT has been out since feburary. The last time i got the car done for the nct it costed about €800 to fix the problems they found. I wasn't going to spend that much again cause im saving to go back to college and im watching every cent. And i can probably live without the car during college. Something has to give, i can't afford a car during college.

Tax is up at the end of june, so im thinking of giving it up. But what do i do with it? No will buy a car without nct. Should i scrap it or what can i do? Where can i go?

Throw it up on the free ads or adverts or something for a few hundred euro. Better than getting nothing for it!! If that fails, then try scrapping it or even giving it away for parts.

Why not put it in for the NCT and see what needs doing? It may not be anything expensive. If it's just a matter of spending €100 or so to get the NCT you might be able to get a 3/400 or so for it as an ideal learner car for someone else.

You see plenty of far older fiestas still on the road so I'd bet you probably know someone who'd be happy to take it off your hands and get it repaired for a couple of hundred. Even getting a few pints for it would be better than giving it to a scrap-yard.

A friend of mine was actually willing to pay someone to take his 98 Punto off his hands when he was heading to Australia a couple of weeks ago. I insisted on putting it up for sale on Adverts and Gumtree and a couple of other sites at €500, it was gone for €400 in under a week. You'll always get someone to buy it, and especially if you're not under any time pressure to sell it, you should get a couple of hundred.

Same with my 95 1.1L petrol one years ago. I had to keep a bottle of oil in the boot at all times to top it up and it seemed to drink more if I had passengers.

i sold a 98 polo with 130k miles, 2 months nct left, no tax, a dodgy head gasket, bad compression in one of the cylinders and bad gear linkage for e300 and tht was wen i was completely honest to the buyer. keep the car alive it could make someone happy, even put a sheet in the window with a price and a ph. no. and dont worry fords always need oil, nature of the engine, have a focus now and it has a little bit of a thirst for it andstill passed nct.

Ah sure, il stick it up on one of those sites and see what happens. Any extra money will be great too. Just thinking who would buy it?

Everything is worth something, i'd chance it thru the NCT see
what come back that needs doing, if you want to keep it.
Otherwise its worth a few hundred euro at least.

Ring around a few scrapyards in your area and see what they'll give you for it.

If you're in the SE, give McBride's in Hugginstown, Co Kilkenny a shout. If you're in Dublin, AFAIK there's a place on the Greenhills Road.

Give your location and someone on here will recommend a breaker's yard for you.

Get the handbrake fixed - it probably needs a new cable. If there's no visible oil leak then she's just burning some, otherwise it might just be a bolt which needs tightening. All in all I'd say get these little obvious things sorted and see if she passes the NCT. At least then you'l know better what else might be wrong which is going to cost money to have fixed.

Was going to book the nct and just see how it goes. But cant get anything until the start of october so cant do it myself cause im moving for college. Want to sell it/get rid of it before september, so might throw it up on one of those websites. Are there any scrapyards or something like that in galway? Don't some them give you money?
