Two Unrelated Questions

    Hi,

1 - Is it possible to set up a key board shortcut to open up activity monitor?

cmd-space + ac + enter is too much of a pain to do, as i do it a lot.

This is also a question just to see how to set up shortcuts for other things as if needs be I could use spotlights as I said or put it in the dock.

I have switched from windows for three or so years now so it is not really a command alt delete hang-up, altho that is pretty much what I am looking for.

2 - Is it possible to make certain apps open quicker as they are huge and sluggish prime culprits being Firefox and XCode.

I know you can't specify memory, but surely their is some way to speed them up a lil?

Or even is it possible to make them open up at startup on a timer and autohidden until clicked??

Tricky, and probably pointless or trivial things for most, I know but they have been bugging me for a while.

    Thanks, in advance.

For 1. You can add a keyboard shortcut for the app in the Keyboard preference pane.

For 2. You can add them as startup items on the User accounts pane. Select your user icon, then the "login items" tab.

It's easy enough to setup a keyboard shortcut to open up activity monitor using Automator.

    Launch Automator ( /Applications/Automator ).
    Choose the "Service" workflow template.
Service receives << Select "no input" >> in << any application >>
Find the "Launch Application" action and drag it to the right hand panel.
Choose << "Other ..." >> in the application list. This will open the dialog box to allow you to browse for the Activity Monitor application ( /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor ).
Save the work flow ( File > Save) and give it a name that you'll recognise, e.g. "Activity Monitor Launcher".
    Close Automator.
Open the System Preferences > Keyboard applet.
With "Keyboard Shortcuts" highlighted, select "Services" in the left hand list.
Scroll down the list on the right until you find the service you created.
Highlight the service and double-click near the right hand side of the row. A box will appear where you can enter the keyboard shortcut.
If the shortcut is valid it will be recorded and will appear when the service is no longer highlighted, e.g. Alt + Apple + 1.
    Close the System Preferences window.

    Ah sound - worked perfect.

Nevermind found an applescript and changed to my needs - set up xcode and firefox in a seperate script to open up as hidden items,

    happy days.

    Cheers!

Firefox still acts up and opens up on delay and hidden but then when the page loads it pops up open.

Safari opens up with wifi connected within a second or to to logging in - epic.

    no - depends.

Try to shut it down every few days - shut it down most days while using in college but using it more now so.

    why?

Just wondering. I always see people in college booting up their Macbooks. I find it strange as I only restart for system updates. So I leave frequently used apps like that running all the time.

I am trying to milk as long as I can out of this macbook - because as soon as it goes I will have to get a cheap laptop and using Lucid Lynx.
