Got my medical card today. Just wondering do dentists only cover emergency dental work that needs to be carried out? Has this come into effect yet? Could I get say a filling done if it was emergency work?

You medical card will cover everything you need, apart from cosmetic work!

If you need any caps or veneers you'll have to pay for them yourself!

unfortunately the med card changes have come in.

what you are entitled to is:
    1 check up per year
    any neccessary extractions
    emergency prescriptions
    2 fillings per year.

everything else needs prior approval and is not easy to get.
cleaning is not covered, dentures are in extreme circumstances etc etc
as eeloe said, you can't get cosmetic work done. it's a needs system, not a wants. howver, now it's a really really needs system.

to answer the last question, yes!! sorry for dragging on!!

No, but a little lateral thinking may entitle you to get 2 fillings.

this tooth with the hole is really really sore when i eat and drink, but it doesn't keep me awake and it doesn't hurt when you put pressure on it...
something along those lines. lateral thinking is the phrase i couldn't think of.

Just to clarify, I qualified also recently for a med card. I thought the new changes meant nobody was covered unless it was a bona fide emergency? Are ye saying I could go and get one check-up per year and 2 fillings (hopefully latter not needed!)?!

Hey according to this these dentists were granted an injuction against the HSE. Does this mean that dental treatment is now free again if you have a medical card which I do?

Or canal roots have to pay that yourself also.
The replacement tooth only if first five in front of mouth.
The rest fillings extractions cleaning can be done.
