Anyone else have this problem, or is it normal for the sky hd box to run very very hot, even when it is in standby the top of the box is very warm.

I found they do run very hot. For piece of mind I had to add extra holes for vents in the back of my TV cabinet, I'm not suggesting you do that but keep it well ventilated and don't store things on it or around it.

I have mine on a separate open shelf.

Hmm. Yes. I have the Amstrad 890 version. After overnight on standby the top of the box is still warm to the touch. I generally power mine down (hold down the on/off button on the remote for more than 5 seconds) if i'm out of the house all day. Saves having to plug the thing out altogether. Box cools down completely.

Why are they hot like this? Crappy power supply? Hard drive? The standard sky box never seems to have this problem.

Yeah. Leave mine on ordinary standby at night for updates like these when I'm in the house, plus for the viewing card "keep alive" signals.
