Did you sign the back of the old log book? Then he should send this off to shannon and they will issue a new logbook to you and you will be the registered owner.

No i didn't sign anything. The guy at the garage where i bought it is a friend of my brother in law and he just took my name and address to send me the log book. Do i sign it when i get it and where do i send it to?

You HAVE to sign it, then HE is obliged to sent to it to the Dept of the Envir in Shannon @ GPF already posted.
Thats the procedure and the law. Get in touch with him ASAP.

Eh, no you don't. If you were selling a car you'd have to sign the Vehicle Licensing Certificate (log book) and return it Shannon.

As you are buying a car from a garage, they will update shannon with the new owners details (your name and address as provided) via computer. Shannon will issue a new Vehicle Licensing Certificate in a few days (but it can take up to two weeks).

Thanks for all the replies. I think i'll ring my brother in law anyway and ask him to ring the guy for me. I appreciate the answers.
