12 month lease - New York

    Hi Folks,

I'm in a group of J1 students over in NY for the summer.

Short term leases are literally impossible to get so my group has considered entering into a 12 month lease.

The problem is we will not be able to stay in NY for that long and will have to leave after 3 or 4 months. I am wondering how liable we will be if we do so?

Do we merely lose the deposit or could we be sued for the remaining months?

Any J1ers have experience of doing this?

    Thanks!

The US government is extremely strict on this. If the landlord reports you, they will indeed get in contact with the Irish government and ensure you pay the remaining months. This is extremely dodgy, I would not suggest doing this in anyway.
