    Hi everyone

I was trawling through Deal Extreme and found this...

    Android Tablet

Apart from the obvious design similarity's to the IPad I thought this looked pretty good, only I comes with Android 1.6 installed.

Is there a way to upgrade to a later version if I got my hands on one?

    Thanks,

    Joe

The best answer that anyone can give you at the moment, is most possibly. :)

The consensus (or at least my interpretation of it!) is that the tablets will be great in a short space of time, however, current reviews suggest that they're not quite there yet (hardware, and as a consequence software). Unresponsive screens, no multi-touch and flaky reliability, etc. The hardware may not support 2.1 or 2.2, and if they did, updates would most likely have to come from the community. So you're taking a gamble buying one this early, but at least it's not the most expensive gamble.

I'd be weary of buying anything like that of deal extreme and would wait untill that are plenty of discussions topics from actual owners.

After what happened with the ekon m001 where deal extreme were selling tablets that weren't as described I would be stay well clear

Buying it from Deal Extreme is a bad bad idea...

Android 1.6 + Cheap Chinese hardware sounds like a recipe for one horrible user experience.

check this website out OP - it has many informations about the "craptablets" of the China :D

    http://slatedroid.com/

    EDIT

FYI as you'll find out from slatedroid there are a number of issues with that tablet including CPU clocked at only 300 mhz, unresponsive resistive touchscreen, slow flash ram (4-5 MB/s)

BUT for that price it might still be a bargain if you temper your expectations

OK i took the plunge and bought this for US$128

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280515303499

from what i can gather it's a Moonse E7001, also known as irobot or apad

the specs are right apparently - 600mhz proc and 500mhz dsp - apparently its good for divx (of which i have a ton)

i still have reservations about build quality, battery life, touchscreen usability etc, but i reckon it could be a steal for, basically, just over 100 euro :)

oh yeah, and according to some bloke on the internet it'll be getting 2.1 and 2.2 in due course (must be true if a bloke on the internet says so :p)

    DivX on Android?

Android only supports MPEG4 and H264 at the moment. The only devices capable of DivX playback are some Samsung phones which use a propetiary player.

According to the guys on the slatedroid forum for this product it does

See this thread as a for instance
    http://slatedroid.com/index.php?topic=213.0

It might be because the hardware is similar to archos tablets and there's a hacked archos update that works on the apad doing the rounds ...

be sure to post about it when you get it. I can think of a few good business ideas for something so cheap and capable provided it doesn't fall to bits
