Im semi-Ok at CC but literary genre is very confusing I find. I think the best thing to do is just keep comparing the texts and avoid summarising.

out teacher has only learned us...

You will do well, I can tell! But seriously, just keep making points of comparison between the texts, analsyse don't summarise

havent even looked at english yet. I feel guilty studying it because I really enjoy it. I'm hoping for literary genre, my grade depends on it.

Its my worst question as well but if you take general vision and viewpoint get a page and take 3 or 4 key moments from each text, dont go into much detail on them but go through how the narrative atmosphere era morals and character (pick 3) in each moment show what the GV&VP is. just do it in key points its easier to read back over. dividing up the page into each section helps too :)

I hate that this is worth more than the poetry and Lear, so strange because the amount of work out into the other two is so much greater. I'm hoping for general vision anyway but not looking forward to it because I only have two texts because I missed the third. It was done in about two weeks :(

okay im lucky enough to have an AMAZING teacher, and heres the essay layout for cultural context (i have one for general vision and viewpoint too, will post it if ye want it)

    Intro -
what is cultural context? Do the texts have more similarities or differences? state your 3 comparative texts.

    Setting -
where the story is set; eg. pride and pred is an english country side. we are aware of this when the Bennet sisters go for walks on numerous occasions.

Class - Class of the people involved; eg. pride and pred have both upper and lower class, and the division is clear when Mr Darcy arrives and Elizabeth is not to approch/speak to him first as he is of a different class. Irony is used to show this as they end up married at the end of the story.

Society - expectations and constraints; eg. pride and pred has Lady Catherine enforcing societies strict rules as she disapproves of Lizzy and Darcy's relationship. this is clear by her rudeness and harsh speak to Lizzy.

    Role of Women -
Women are either of equal status/lower; eg. in pride and pred it is clear they are of a lower status. Mrs Bennet has only one wish for her daughters- to marry well- she simpally doesnt care about anything else like education or happiness. it is ironic Lizzy marries darcy much to her mothers happiness, and hers, although society disapproves greatly.

Role of Men - Men are of equal or higher status; eg in Pride and Pred it is evident they are of a higher status. this is showen when mr collins comes to inspect his inheritance once Mr Bennet dies. the family house dooes not go to one of the Bennet girls because they are simpally girls and not entitled to that sort of responsibility.

Conclusion - Stories are either similar or different in many aspects

Make sure you have the 4 comparative elements in each paragraph:
    1. Statement - The story is set in...
2.Key Moment - This is shown by...
    3. Treatment (Irony, staturised, Inner psychological motivation...how it is potrayed) - (Austen) shows this...
    4. Comparative language ( Likewise, simararly, on the other hand, different to that, in contrast, meanwhile...) - Meanwhile, in Pride and Pred, the story is quiet different....

Pick one main text (the one you know best) and use that as the frame of your essay- Work the other two around that one.

    Good Luck :D

Hey I'm doing different texts but would you mind putting the layout up for general vision? If you could that would be fantastic.

    General Vision and Viewpoint:

Intro- what is General Vision and Viewpoint? are the three texts happy or sad/ optimistic or passimistic? state your three comparative texts.

Community - Is the communitytightly knitor isolated; eg. in pride and pred there is a very tight knit community- displayed when Mr Darcy arrives and it is evident the wives were gossiping about him as they know everything about him. Irony is used as this is extreamly childish for grown women.

Difficulties of central character - what is holding the character from expressing themselves as a unique individual?; eg in pride and pred it is Lizzys pred towards Mr Darcy. she must overcome this to become truely happy and ignore societies constraints. Irony- she hated him at the start of the novel, but ends up marrying him.

    Growth of central character -
hows does the central character grow and mature as a person throughout the novel?; eg in pride and pred Lizzy ignores Lady Catherine and gives Darcy a chance, showing she has matured greatly as a person. Humour is used in Lady Catherines many attempts at destroying their relationship fail miserably.

    Acceptance of central character -
Does society/family/friends accept the changes; eg in pride and pred it is ironic that Lizzy's choice of man pleases both her, her family and esp her mother (lizzy married for love, her mother had no such expectations as her only concern was money) although lady Catherine and the rest of society does frown upon the union, lizzy uses her newly gained maturity to deal with this. Irony is used.

    Situation for other characters -
what is the outlook for the other characters? eg in pride and pred it is an optimistic ending- almost all of the Bennet daughters are enganged/already married, fufilling their mothers wish, while societies constraints have been altered to cater for Lizzy and her decisions. Irony that the man lizzy marries pleases her mother too.

Conclusion - Is the outlook in the three texts happy or sad/ optimistic or pessimistic. how is this achieved ( a common treatment for the three texts would be useful here-irony or humour)

follow this layout for each paragraph:
*In all three texts a tightly knit community is evident.
*(Discuss each text with statement, key moment, treatment and comparative language)
*Although the communities differ in class and setting, the love and warmth they show the central character throughout the novel is evident at even the worst of times.
(this usually takes up 3/4 of a A4 page for me, but id say you could get by on a half page per paragraph if your language was good and your facts were relevent)

    Good Luck :D

We learned that in the exact same way! I was very luck to have an amazing English teacher aswell.
To the OP try not to base your main text on the film!!! Thats a huge no-no. The film is generally used to pad out your answer while the play is most commonly the main text used. Good luck mate. I already said this in another post but I have to say it again, English paper 2 on my 18th birthday, aren't I so lucky to get a great present like that :pac:

Cultural context is the world of the texts and the forces within it,these worlds shape the lives of the characters. The three texts I have studied for my comparative study are "pride and prejudice" (p.p) written by Jane Austen,"casablanca" (casa)directed by Micheal Curtiz an "Sive" by John.B.keane. My anchor text of the mode culural context is (p.p) as it is set in the english countryside in the 1700's.

Despite the very different worlds of (p.p) and Sive, they are similar in many ways .We know that in (p.p) that it is set in the english countryside ,as the Bennet girls regulary take walks ,likewise as in Sive it is set in the countryside.we see this as mena regulary milks the cows and mike sells cattle in a nearby market, while in contrast to (casa) it is set in the town , where gambling, drinking and socialising takes place in Rick's cafe.

There is major class diffenence in (p.p), there are upper and lower classes throughout the novel.it is clear of class division when Mr.Darcy arrives at Meryton ball among with Mr.Bingley and his two sisters,Elizabeth is not to approach ror speak to Mr.Darcy first as he is of a higher class status then Elizabeth and her family. The same class difference is seen in Sive as Mena is all too eager to marry Sive to Sean Dota as he is of higher class in rural Ireland due to his wealth and ownership of a "motor car", which was rarely seen in the 1950's ,which was a large ealth factor determining the class difference.Meanwhile in (casa) there is no class difference as all who arrive in and stay at Casablanca have only the same thought in mind;to gain exit visa's and live in freedom in America awayfrom Nazi domain.

The role of society also led to many expectations an constraints,in (p.p) it is clearly seen when Lady Catherine De Bourgh believes her nephew is to propose to Elizabeth. She becomes arrogant andrude to Elizabeth when she arrives unexpected at Netherfield, she become outraged that her nephew would want to marry someone who would disgrace the highclas society. She says "This match,to which you have the presumption to aspire, can never take place..." ,Lady Catherine De Bourgh shows the role that Darcy through his higher status could never marry Elizabeth as it would be socially impossible. This is similar to Sive through the Irish rural society she was born illegitimate and having that she beenraised by her uncle Mike. The matchmake between Sead Dota and Sive would of been possible over that in 1950's Ireland it was seen disgraceful to have been born out of wedlock meaning that she was only expected to marry whoever would take her.

While on the other hand in (casa),the role of society is not as Important as even though the Nazi's were in control at the time Rick shows them no special treatment and even refuses there cash he says "your cash is not welcome here"

The role of women in (p.p) are of equal or lower importance in the novel.Jane Austen shows this as women at the time were of lttle importance through the role of the husband or father was to pass away. When Mr.Collins arrives at the bennet household,he only comes to inspect what he is to inherit since he being the only male heir.If Mr.Bennet was to die, then the Bennet women could easily be thrown out onto the street or be left to stay.Sive resembles this as in rural 1950's Ireland women were to be married first before before they were to have children , a womans reputaion could of easily been damaged if born out of wedlock. We are shown this is Mena finds leaving Sive in school is only a waste of money as she is a womanand illegitimate. while (casa) is very different from (p.p) and Sive , as woman are of equal or higher staus .Ilsa has started an affair with Rick while in Paris even though she is already married to Victor Lazlo who was in a concentration camp at the time.Women in (casa) are not easliy dominated unlike in (p.p) and Sive where if they are unhappy in marrage they must remain loyal to their partners ,whereas Ilsa finds true happiness with Rick.

this is all I have written out please help me to improve as Im very shakey with english and I just hope to pass.

You're about 14 years too late! It's not just students who post here you know:rolleyes:

My point is the same though - there is no right or wrong way to approach GVVP, that's what makes it difficult, it's so open. The structure you have is fine, use it, but it's not more 'right' than someone else's.

Your best bet is Lit Genre. CC has come up every year it's been on the course.

Do out a table for each comparative mode, with the texts going down and the headings you'd use for your essay going across. You can then revise the structure of your essays and compare your texts on one sheet e.g. if 'creation of memorable characters' is one of your headings on Lit Genre, then you can have short notes on Rick in Casablanca in one column, Kate in Lughnasa in another and Michael in Lies of Silence in the third. You can do the same for all of your headings. It's handy to have it all on one sheet.

Point of view: is it a third person/first person narrative? Why is this used? Chronology: is it told in time order or is flashback used? Are symbols used?
