Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use a laptop in a car by connecting it to the little round socket that seems to be there for lighting cigarettes?
I understand that it can be used to charge various things but can I just run them off it directly?

You have to look around for a car charges. You can get on ebay http://computers.shop.ebay.ie/Laptop-Accessories-/31530/i.html?_nkw=car+charges&_catref=1&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282 also might get one in Peats or Maplin.

Another alternative is in inverter to produce mains voltage, then plug the normal charger into that. Aldi have had them in the past I think. Maplin probably do them too.

so is it not possible to just use the laptop in a car without using its own batteries -or without charging its batteries?

I can't just plug it into the round socket as if it was a normal socket , albeit at a 12V direct current?
In the house you can ,I think run it off the mains (I haven't had one of my own yet)

Got a 300W for 35 IIRC in Maplins for going to france. Works perfect. Simplest option IMO.
