You're not going to get a fast diesel...not for 15K anyway...

    Otherwise there is this:

You and the rest of the world. What kind of useage do you have?

What would you be willing to compromise? You could get an older BMW 320cd Msport for example. eg http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1228340

Powerful to me is 250bhp upwards. So for 15k you need to stay petrol. Still though, you could buy an Evo 7 for maybe 10k and keep 5k for petrol!

Do around 4 hundred miles a week. My own car does around 25 mpg. By quick i mean anything over 100 bhp. 08 preferably to qualify for the low road tax!

I'd consider 100bhp to be below average, but there you go.
In that case you'll have plenty of options for 15k. Small and stylish... kind of subjective too, some people think the bland golf to be stylish, others prefer Italian styling. Is it a coupe you're after?

The Fabia vrs is a 1.9 diesel, 130 bhp

Alternatively, a class above an Octavia or Golf 140/170 bhp, maybe DSG...

If I were doing 400+ miles a week, I'd want a comfortable car, not a strained 1.4 td hatch. You're spending €15,000 on a car- surely a few more blips on road tax doesn't hurt?

2008 diesels will hold their value well due to the new Tax rates.

At 15K, the Leon is your best bet. VAG 1.9TDI is about 105bhp and pretty bulletproof. The Astra is 89bhp, but the 3 door Astra is a lovely car to drive, if a little underpowered. Mini would be a good buy if you work in Peter Marks.

Im not after a coupe. I already have a comfortable car. An audi a4. But its petrol and my bank account doesnt like that. The seat leon looks a viable option. Stylish aswel....

I just bought 08 audi a3 se 59k up north last week, works out just over 15k with vrt/exchange etc.

An Audi A4 getting 25mpg? It should be getting high 30s. It must be a high performance model or broken.

Yep its a 1.6 petrol and does anything between 25 and 30 mpg depending. The passat looks good but the price doesnt include vrt. What would the vrt be? Mite check out that website aswel and see about cars in the north.
    Thanks.

The Fabia vRS was not available in 2008 though.

VRT on the Passat works out at €5050

OP, something like this might be worth looking for:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201014197563511

140bhp and only €156 to tax per year.

You probably only need something like an air flow meter and you should be back up to high 30s mpg again.

Jesus man, there's something wrong with that! My Clio172(2litre and over 180hp) averages out higher than that with town driving and pushing it on a fair bit... So regular driving for me :p

Seriously though, don't write off petrols just yet..most will get high 30s once they're serviced and looked after(my own can achieve about 50mpg at 100km/h cruising along which ottostreet on here could confirm)

Slightly over budget but some car for the money ;)

    170BHP Tdi :D

That's cos your car doesn't need it's neck wrung just to get it to move. The 1.6 A4 is truly dire and really needs pushing to get any sort of performance, which kills the fuel economy.

Just think what the diesel will give if driven the same way ;)

I'm now looking at changing to a diesel. I can get around 7L/100km from the Honda, but I can get around 4.8L/100km from a Diesel which is the difference between 750km from a €72 tank fill of Petrol and 1,200km from a €65 tank fill of diesel.

All of the above would be reasonable options - I've tweaked your search criteria bit as most of the cars are actually 07's.

Personally if I was looking for something in that price range there is only one car I'd be interested in....

This one looks like it's been there for a while based on the pictures so you might get a good deal. Bring one in from the UK and you'll get them cheaper...

If you can stretch the budget a little, this will we well worth it. It has the extra BHP, low tax and is also a Diesel

Id be careful buying one of them, a friend of mine nought a 08 one type s with only 16000 miles on it and the clutch and flywheel had to be repalced after a month now it was under warranty but otherwise would have cost him 1600 euro.

Now according to him its a comon fault on them hes on a civic owners forum and suppossedly its happened to a fair few who own them.

I know i could be wrong but could be worth checking up on if deciding to look at one.

Ok then, theres alot more options than i thought. Will look at all the cars metîoned and also look at sourcing the car up north.
    Cheers.

That is under warranty, so wouldn't be too concerned about that. They're an excellent car, nice left-of-centre styling instead of the typical bland-boxes on the road. Well kitted out too.
That 1.9 golf above doesn't have the extra bhp, still only 105.

Yeh true it its still under warranty but d say the op is planning on keeping it beyond the time frame of the warranty.

Im not a big fan of the exterior styling on them but interior is excellent, really spacious and modern. Plus it does have a fair bit of poke in it aswell.
