Gorgeous cars, they're on my list.

People either love it or hate it. It's much more unique the a 318Ci at any rate. It looks just as good as the Fiat Coupe imo, even if it doesn't have the performance.

True it is fairly unique. Each to their own. I just cant see any other reason why anyone would want one except that theres not too may of them around

I've never owned one, but I did have a 406 saloon and it was one of the most comfortable mile-eaters i've ever had. On top of that, I think the 406 coupé is a very good-looking car. Not good-looking in the Irish sense of looking aggressive & expensive with fat wheels, but elegant and balanced - to me, the lines and proportions are just right. Mind you, i'd be wanting a V6 auto.

Pininfarina- I thought I'd get the P word out of the way.

They're a great car but not necessarily a walk in the park. If you're expectations of reliability are too high, you may end up disappointed eventually.

Meh, nothing a grand and a good auto electrician won't sort out.;)

One of the best looking coupés ever made, in my opinion.

Nothing wrong with wanting something really comfortable with a great interior that looks like that.

Don't know much about what you should be looking out for, but if you end up with one, well ware. ;)

not really, i think its a lovely looking car, pitty its a Peugeot though....

suspentions weak and any slight lack in maintenance and expect catastrophic Failures in the cars wealfare

a 3.0 v6 conversion would be ideal, for all the right reasons :)

It's not a conversion, the 3 litre engine is factory fitted.

I found both the mechanicals and the suspension in mine to be strong (and the suspension is especially impressive), the weak point to me seemed to be the electrics.

Well I like em! Apart from looking well (Pininfarina design as mentioned already), they are one of the few coupes you won't see being driven by hairdressers or wealthy wives....

Not a fan of peugeot but I'd make an exception for a nice one of these.

The only thing that disappoints me about the 406 coupe is that they took the dashboard straight from the saloon. It just looks out of place to me and the only giveway that the coupe was designed 12 years ago. The exterior however has aged gracefully and my pick of the litter would be the 2.2 litre HDi with full leather interior.

+1, i owned a 406 saloon, and it was moust comfortble/reliable car i owned. thats even considering i had 1.8 petrol version...

Wasnt this one designed by one of the Ferrari designers?

Dont know much aboutthese things, but i love them... Dont expect 2.0 to be fast, as its only a 8v engine. If you whant something more fester get a 3.0 m8 ;)

    p.s. lovely looking cars :D

I get the impression that these cars are really on form with an autobox. They're unique cruisers in a lovely bodyshell.

I had one of these for 2 years. Sold it last May. What a beautiful car!!! I always loved them. Mine was dark green / nearly black. I used to get compliments all the time at petrol station, traffic lights ect.
My love was short lived,,, I sold it with 92k miles on the clock which is not a huge amount of mileage but had a HUGE amount of problems for my 2 years owning it,,

    Rad sprang a leak!!
    Clutch Went!
    Exhaust Went!
    Radio Went
    Window regulator Went!!
    Oil Leak,,,,
No A/C and my god did it get hot inside!!!
Side trim came off and this was €150 to replace ( just a bit of rubber)
Trusty car on juice as well

On the out side it was in mint condition under the bonnet a different story,,,, swore to myself I would never buy a french car again,, traded it in for a mazda and I've been smiling ever since.
Glad I owned one as it is an absolute gorgeous looking car,, but I would take reliability over looks any day!!!

Nope, they are the very same under the skin.

hmm... well i can honestly say, my 406 was a like a TANK. drove from cork to Ennis and back 6 days per weak for 6 months, and all what i needed to do to it, was change oil and brake pads!

I sold that car 2 years ago after owning it for a year to a friend. she drives it happily and newer ever had trouble! She even forgot that her nct expired, took car for nct, withouth even mechanic looking at it, and it passed!

i presume you can get lemons anywhere... :(

I used to own one of these. They are probably my favourite car for a reasonable price range, if you know what I mean. It's a very comfortable ride and looks the business if you ask me. I had it for about 18 months. In that time my gearbox oil started leaking and I needed it replaced. That's the only big mechanical thing to go wrong with it. I did have some stupid other things wrong with it (maybe just down to build quality) like the bonnet cable snapped and I needed to replace it, the membrane in my door started leaking, some panel under the car that was holding some rubber part of my bumper on came loose a couple of times (clearly I know what I'm talking about!!). Probably a couple of other little things fell of or something like that, but in generally mechanically there was no major problems and the build quality stuff I could happily live with considering how great the car looks. I always got loads of compliments off everybody that saw it, since they are relatively rare and it made me feel good! In short after having owned one it's still one of my favourite cars (if not my favourite) that I could realistically afford to drive, and if I was looking to buy a car again, this would definitely be a model I would look at getting again.

In short, go for it, they look so damn good!! You might have a few little build quality things like I had, but then again just look at the car! Completely worth it in my opinion!! Absolutely love them.

I used to own one of these - in terms of looks, I still think they're a lovely looking car. The lines of the car are really nice - it's not agressive looking by any means but I do think they've stood a good test of time. The kind of money they go for nowadays aswell, is a plus.

It was my first car, so went for the first one I saw (probably not the best move but such was the excitement!). Anyway, I got one in green (which, for a green colour, is a nice one - galileo green as far as I remember). I got a cloth interior however, which, while very comfy, not the most flattering of interiors. A tan leather interior would be my preference - goes best with blue, green or grey exterior. Not mad on black leather but that's just me. They have it in oxblood red interior also but a bit OTT for me.

Owned it for 2 years but did encounter a few problems I must say - alternator went, among a few other things.

If you do decide, ensure that the timing belt has been done when it should have been i.e. around 55-60k miles (done again, depending on mileage).
If getting leather, you will find the the likelihood is that there is quite alot of wear on the drivers seat bolster (I think that's what it's called!) - where one's back-side would catch on the seat when getting in!!! The piping tends to get frayed therefore the seat tends to look quite worn.

Lastly, if intending on buying, look up the 406 coupe forum - I was a member during ownership and it's helpful for hints and tips and what to look out for!

    Good luck!
