Las Vegas & Road Trip

    Hi all,

Myself and 4 friends (all in our mid-20's)are thinking of heading to Vegas for 4 nights and then to rent a car and travel for another 10 days or so.

Just wondering if anyone could suggest places we could travel to, want to maybe go to see the real USA, smaller cities and local people, and of course places where we can go out and enjoy ourselves! Im aware LA or Miami would be possible destinations but there pretty touristy and looking for something a bit different.

Also, can anyone recommend a car hire company or are the big companies as good as the rest. Looking to rent an SUV/Jeep style thingy.

    Thanks in advance

SUV and similar tend to cost a good bit more than sedans/saloons. We rented a Nissan Rogue (Qashqai type thing) last Dec for about $600 for a week - saloon would have been about $200 for same period from Avis.

We drove San Fran -> Napa Valley -> Big Sur -> Vegas

If you get the chance, do drive Big Sur - it's gobsmackingly lovely.

Hired a Dodge SUV using the Dollar UK site in March last year. Six days rental cost me £240 sterling which I thought was a hell of a deal.

For what it's worth we left Vegas and travelled south east to the Hoover Dam and basically circled the Grand Canyon taking in the Arizona desert, Monument Valley, Zion National Park in Utah on the way back.

Fabulous trip but not too many cities offering hectic nightlife.

We were away for a month around California and stopped in Vegas for a few days, awesome place. Are you flying home from Vegas? This would determine where else you should go.
You could go to the Hoover dam and the Grand Canyon, we did it in a day but it was a LONG day, I'd advise stay overnight.
San Fran is good as is San Diago, from here you could make a trip to Tijuana (Wed is Irish night!) you can get a tram from San Diago and then walk across the boarder with no problems. LA is good to see the usual sights, Walk of Fame etc but I wouldn't recommend staying long here.
Are you looking to make any beach stops? There's lots of nice ones along the California coast too, just stop in one as you're driving through. We just booked everything as we went along that way you are not tied to any place if you don't like it.
