at €139 its ok. the USB powered feature is all that sets it above the rest but not sure if its worth €60 more than a mains powered one though...

I suppose its the small size and no need for a power socket.

    Yes.

Many people use these types of drives for media players (WDTV etc). The 2.5" ones have lower power consumption and can be powered by the host device. The small size is convenient because you are constantly bringing it back and forth to copy new movies onto it, or lend it to mates etc. They're also more robust, moving them around a lot is less likely to result in failure or data loss.

Or if you are travelling around and taking a laptop/netbook with you. Its a lot handier to have one of these, you can just slip it in one of the pockets on your laptop bag.

    Wow, hero.

I have 2.5 TB and need far more room.
What do you use to store that much stuff, having a ton of external drives takes up so much room.

Just read thread about Pixmania, before you buy anything of them.

Video productions and photography.. nearly 6TB for the photos and backups..

They are messy as most of them are external 3.5 drives so its a lot of cables, the big ones are 2tb..

Absolutely, Pixmania, are a good company unless you run into a return issue, then its messy and long. but I have used them for years and only had one problem which took 8 weeks to sort but was finally sorted... for me its a % game, they ship a lot and have a few problems that they drag their heels on, but in fairness if they were as bad as is made out then they simply would not be in business.. I ONLY BUY WHAT I REALLY WANT FROM THEM....

You can get the 3.5" version of this hard drive on amazon here for €78.
I doubt the portability of this 2.5" HD is worth roughly €62.

If you can live with a mains powered HD then this 2TB one is €142 from misco.ie.

If your dead set on a 2.5" USB powered HD, then I'd go for this one on carphonewarehouse.ie. It's a 1TB portable iomega HD for €109.90.

The carphone link doesnt say its 2.5 ? do you have it ?

Your right. My bad. It's 3.5". There is a 2.5" version though. They look identical so it hard to tell when not mentioned.

2.5inch, so could I buy this, rip it out of the casing, and put it into my laptop instead? I'm looking to do a reformat/upgrade soon..

    Yes you could.

But I'd imagine it'd be easier/cheaper just to buy an internal 2.5 drive.

Possibly but probably not. This drive has a non standard 12.5mm thickness, the standard is 9.5mm. Most laptops wont allow for the extra 3mm in the Hd bay.
