Why are Some Irish anti Israeli

    The Irish and the Israelis have a lot of common ground.

    The Israeli underground fighting the British during the pre-1948 era was modeled on the old IRA.

    Yitzhak Shamir the 7th Prime Minister of Israel and leader of the anti British occupation group Lehi adopted the nom de guerre "Michael", in honor of Michael Collins.

    Ireland has also been the birth place of many great Israelis.
    Rabbi Herzog's sons Chaim (a future president of Israel) and Yaacov (a great scholar and diplomat) and Max Nurock of the Israeli Foreign Ministry

    When Ireland became a republic upon leaving the British Commonwealth in 1949, it was written in the Irish constitution that Judaism was a state religion. It thus had the same rights as Catholicism and Protestantism. The constitution says that whenever there is a state function, for instance for a foreign president, the order of presentations is: the Irish president, the head of the Catholic Church, the head of the Protestant church and then the Chief Rabbi.

    In the past, there were three Jewish members of parliament who all stood up for Israel, one in each of the three main parties. Ben Briscoe belonged to Fianna Fail, Alan Shatter to Fine Gael, and Mervyn Taylor to Labor. The latter was the first Irish Jew to become a cabinet member when he was appointed labor minister in 1993. He then served as minister for equality and law reform during the two governments of 1993-1994 and 1994-1997.

    Irish exports to Israel are exports are worth 344 million USD.

    They reflect the overall trade relationship in higher value goods. Irish exports are mainly in the sectors of machinery and electronics, chemicals, textiles and/or related articles, foodstuffs & beverages and optical/medical and related equipment.

    I'd be anti-Israeli purely for the fact that they took peoples lands and kicked them out.
    But hey that's just me.

    I answer your question with a question. Why are some questions loaded?

    I guess it's something to do with the apartheid policy, illegal landgrabs and murder of innocent people.

    the Irish and Palestinians have more in common,
    spending a period of time under an occupation and all that...

    Its unfair to say that we are anti Israeli (why?), most people have more pressing concerns like getting on with their lives in this recession

    i think you trying to use the anti-semitic paintbrush in order to deflect discussion from a certain recent illegal act of Piracy by a certain nation

    more importantly:
    people need to understand that there is a difference between the Israeli government and the Israeli people, most of whom are also trying to get on with their lives
    for that matter theres a difference between Hamas and Palestinian people, most of whom are also trying to get on with their lives

    spot a common trend there

    @OP why have you opened this thread? why are you trying to stir up ****?

    They act like facist nazis, they think that they are superior to anybody else is the world. They believe they can do anything to anybody and that there is no consequences.

    Any Israeli I've ever met has been a dick head

    The only good thing is that there women are hot.

    The irish (for the most part) see the Palestinian problem as similar to what they had to go through under British rule.

    Thats why they sympathise more with the Palestinians than the Israelis.

    So we should give up the 344 Million USD export trade and sit on a high horse.

    I'm not an anti-Semite,infact I have Jewish family in London
    but even they don't agree with what is done by Israel

    have Israel learned nothing from northern Ireland?

    Sure arn't we well used to supporting murderers in the form of Sinn Fein/IRA in this country. We'd have to cheer on Hamas. Never mind, that for all their faults, Israel is the closest thing to a democracy and ally of the west in one of the world's most volatile region. Or that the same people that the Irish Left so vehemently cheerlead for have no concept of rights for women, homosexuals, or non muslims! :rolleyes:

    i don't agree with what Hamas do either

    why is it always that people try to over simplify this

    ````:rolleyes:
    I'm locking this for now as the flotilla thread is enough for work for the AH mods.
    You could start a thread on Irish-Israeli connections in Humanities maybe?
