Full or amended plan?

I'm looking for opinions on this one folks, preferably from anyone who may have once been in the same boat.

I was training for the Edinburgh marathon when 10 days before it, i pulled my right calf while walking. So the calf is healing away.

Anyway i'm thinking of doing Dublin and wondering if i would need to start a full training program again in July or is it possible to amend the training to a mixture of lsr, speed sessions and regular runs. I was aiming to break 3.30 in Edinburgh and training was going well.

    Thanks in advance

I was in the same boat, picking up a calf injury shortly before Edinburgh last year. Plenty of cycling, swimming and physio, and I came back stronger than ever. Followed a 12 week P&D plan (from scratch) for Berlin in September last year and had a great race. I was off for around 2 months, so I felt I would benefit from starting a program again. I just did it more ambitiously, and trained faster for a faster goal.

    Interesting thread...

I've just completed Edinburgh (4hrs - bit dissapointed despite the heat).

I realise I need to ramp up the training if I want to get the 3.30 (In DCM 2010).

I've been reading P& D's "Advanced Marathoning" and I'm looking at following the up to 55 miles p.w. plan.

Problem is this...The 18 week plan is due to start on the 21st June. I am away for the last 2 weeks in July and while I plan to run while away it will be nothing near what is called for in the program.

Should I just wait until I return and start the 12 week up to 55 miles p.w. program on 3rd August instead? If so what should I be doing in the meantime?

    Any advice greatly appreciated!

Chinguetti - sorry for hijacking your thread!

No worries, TakeaBow, i'm just looking for some informed opinions so the more, the merrier.

I'ld love to break 3.30 but don't know if i could take another 4 months of training and something happen again. I'll probably be a nervous wreck for all of October as well so fearful i'ld be of something going wrong.

    Chinguetti,

I was training for Edinburgh last year and was well set to absolutely smash my PB - 2 weeks before hand I picked up a nasty knee injury which made running impossible. Could do any other activity but running was a no go.

Came back, trained for Dublin was all set again to smash my PB - just over two weeks to go while cycling home from work(what was set to be my last time using the bike before the marathon) a bus pulled in suddenly in front of me and BAM! I was gone and so was my PB attempt.

Came back, trained for Barcelon was all set again to smash my PB, guess what? - just under 3 weeks to go I picked up a virus and was unable to leave my bed or train for 2 weeks. When I ran the marathon I readjusted my goal but still went out pretty fast and crashed at 15 miles.

Only one of these was my fault, I know where I went wrong when I got injured. Injuries happen, things go wrong, I still ran Barca and Dublin because psychologically I HAD to. You'll be fine, the injury this time round sounds like it was all down to bad luck - and if something does go wrong again, you know what? screw it - my 3 training plans have benefited me massively, I've seen some huge improvements because I've trained for three marathons, I was set for 3 marathons I just didn't get the good time at the end but I DID get the benefits of my training.

If you train and work hard and get to race and get your time that'll be amazing, if you train and work hard and something happens - so what? you've done your training and in the long run that WILL stand to you.
