As the title says, it's the situation I'll be in a few weeks ahead from now - so please, share anything you'd like about the region.

I'd be very interested in hearing about what kinda place you'd like to stay at to be a shorter busride from the HP-office, but not too far away from Dublin. We're two guys lookin' to shack up together, so we figured we'd lease a 2 or 3 room flat.

Thanks in advance for any responses,
    Christian

    Hey Christan,
There are 3 maybe 4 towns/estates that are close to HP. 1 being closest to HP, 4 is the furthest:

    1. Leixlip
    2. Celbridge
    3. Maynooth
    4. Lucan

Lucan would be closest to town but the bus will take a little longer to get to HP and its a dublin bus (you have to pay). There is a shuttle bus (free) that serves part of celbridge and Leixlip which will drop you to the HP carpark. I don't think there is a shuttle bus from Maynooth to HP.

All of those towns above have late night buses that will drop you home from town. Like anywhere, there are rougher areas in each of those estates. Try www.daft.ie for places to rent.

PM me if you have any questions or ask here and I'm sure someone can help out. Good luck.

There are plenty of places to rent that are within walking distance, or cycling distance of HP, in Leixlip. Get onto google earth, stick in leixlip, locate HP, locate estate names, look for places to rent on www.daft.ie

I know of one apartment thats up for rent, on the celbridge road in leixlip, that would be in walking distance, or cycling (10 minutes by foot), in a straight line to HP

Oh and don't be afraid to bring some Swedish women with you

First of all, thanks for the response.

I've asked around 'bout both Leixlip and Maynooth at another place just previous to this, and someone mentioned Leixlip being a real dull town to actually live in as far as nightlife activities and such goes. Maynooth somewhat being the opposite, however I did realize it was on the 'other' side of HP.

As I'm a young gentleman lookin' to find beauty in strange places, Dublin seems to be where I'll be spending my weekends. Which means I'd like to end up somewhere between Leixlip and Lucan, I suppose. Shuttlebus for the win, as well, which disqualifies Lucan and sets up an outer border.

I've been to daft.ie a couple of times, but I find their lack of pictures on a lot of the apartments to be ridiculous. A few of them only shows the kitchen and parking space. Makes no real sense. I figured I'd stick to finding a proper town that suits me, and then I'd contact daft.ie and ask for some proper showings of the flats.

Another perhaps odd question, though.. are there a lot of internationals there (besides other Swedes and the local Irish)? I'm fond of variation, or something along that line, grin.

    Yet again, thanks!

Oh, & P.S - the ladies, we don't like bringing them too far from their natural habitat, they could get swooped up by marauding Irish or slicktalkin' French. We watch their backs for them, knohumsayn.. tehe.

I´m finnish and I have been living in Kildare some time now, first 3 years in Celbridge and now in Maynooth.

Both places are just fine, different feeling tough depending the town but no problems with either of the towns.

I think Maynooth is better for nightlife tough, but I am/was happy in both of these towns, also Maynooth is way better for connections to the city, specially the train service is great, close to the village and not like in Celbridge, where the train is not that close.

Move first to Ireland and then you can start to worry about where to live, but it is really really easy nowdays to rent a room, lot of choices and not many people looking for rooms. Altough nowdays you could even rent a studio (1 room apartment) for around 600e, something good has come trough the recession.

Internationals in Kildare, I think most of the them are east europeans, I would not expect to meet much nordics in Kildare.

Oh yes, since you are coming from Sweden, an advice: Don´t except houses to be well built, because they are not and don´t except things to work, because they usually do not:)

    Have fun in Ireland.

Maynooth is bigger than Leixlip, has more pubs and some lively night clubs. It's also a College town, so its full of students. So yea, it would be better than Leixlip in that sense.

However, it would still be my advice to look around Leixlip. You can get to Maynooth easily from Leixlip (1 train stop), you'd be closer to Dublin and to HP.

Ireland is full of Central/Eastern Europeans who come here to work, many of which you won't see out socialising all that often.

If you're looking for international fanny, Dublin is your best bet

Ps. Leixlip does have a great beer garden, for when the weather is good. Don't think Maynooth has a decent beer garden. (could be wrong)

    Crooklyn,
If i were in your position i would pick Maynooth 100% of the time.
    Enjoy,
    Charles

It's closing up, and we're currently looking for a 3-4 bedroom apartment/house to let.

People seem to recommend Maynooth for the nightlife, but considering the fact that it's further from Dublin in general, I always sort of figured people who party go to Dublin? All I know though, is that I'd prefer a big city to ravage through.

Celbridge isn't something I consider, but how 'bout st. Edmunds / Juliet Square? I've heard they got pretty close to the trains n buses, 15 mins to both HP n Dublin.

Leixlip would be nice since it's close n all, but if it's real dead apart from working it sounds sort of tedious.

Although Leixlip is closest to the city center, there isn't really any difference between getting to and from the city center from either Maynooth or Leixlip.
So once or twice a week you'll make the effort to and go into the city center but the other evenings during the week you'll find much more to entertain yourself around Maynooth. It's a college town so there will be many more like minded people looking for fun, friendship and general distraction.

Ah, so the time has come. After spending the first 2 months livin' 6 guys cramped up in a 3-bedroom apartment in the Heuston South Quarter-development, we finally get our own place in the Hilton-development adjacent the St. James (?) park. A beautiful penthouse, stunning view, 3-bedrooms. Quite happy with the choice. Now comes all the minor things, though..

After hearing around, experiencing UPC first-hand these first months - that's not something I'd be interested in having myself. The thread pertaining DC's over on the dark (tech) side of this forum in regards to UPC has like 15k views and around 250 replies, and yeah, let me just say there's def. issues with their connection.

Magnet on the other hand seems to be a magnificent choice at first hand, seeing how they offer the only (?) lines which isn't shared with others, plus a special gaming package which apparently lowers latency and other ping-related issues us nerds would be inclined to dwell upon late at night, having conversations with our bottles of coke. Anywho.. what'd you guys recommend?

On another topic, we have the gasquestion. Apparently, it's already pre-hooked to serve the heatingpart of the apartment. I'm thinkin' after what I've heard so far: buy warm clothes. Gasprices being rather high? Not sure if it's also used to heat up the tapwater, would anyone know if that's normal?

& also, since we're 3 metrosexual guys we need ladies. Give. All your base are belong to us! :D

Gas is usually the cheapest heating option here, and it is cheaper to use it to heat the water then the immersion.

Find out if you are on an llu broadband exchange,if not nearly all your dsl options are the same they are all resold Eircom bitstream.

Magnet is only available in certain areas. UPC can be perfectly fine. I wouldn't write it off entirely on the basis of one thread. Sure there's a load of replies..but what of the thousands of UPC customers who seem to do perfectly fine?
