Just had my car serviced and was told that it needed a new timing belt - I was a bit surprised because there's only 72,000km on it. Rang a few places (including a main dealer) to get quotes and both told me that it's a chain on the basic '07 A3, not a belt. Rang the original place back to ask and they went and checked on the computer and said they're definitely sure it's a timing belt. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I'm very confused!

    Petrol or diesel? 1.9 or 2l? 1.6 or 1.8T?

I think the 1.6 petrol has a belt, recommended interval 5yrs/60,000 miles.

    HI,

YES IT IS A TIMING BELT AND IT SHOULD BE CHECKED AT EVERY SERVICE AND IF THERE IS WEAR AND TEAR IT HAS TO BE REPLACED.

THE TENSIONERS NEED REPLACING AS WELL AND THE WATER PUMP THERE IS NO USE REPLACING THE TIMING BELT ALONE.

APPROX. 175 EUROS FOR WATER PUMP EXCHANGE UNIT AND TIMING BELT KIT.
