    Hi All

Just wondering for some advice really - how have people found it? where to start etc? Am a working mum of 2 but may be able to take redundancy and want to take the opportunity to change careers.

Does it depend on what i did in college 10 yrs ago? Is there an interview ?? Sorry for all the questions

Would love to hear all advice - good and bad !!

You have to apply through PAC. thats http://www.pac.ie

The deadline for PGDE 2011-12 is 1st December this year. That is the earliest you can do it now.

It doesn't matter where you did you primary degree, what will matter is the grade. You should have a look at the pac site and see how many points you will need for the PGDE and how many you have (ie: the class of your grade)

you get extra points for masters, postgrad certs (min. full time 1 year) but if you don't have enough points you will have to do one of these to receive more points.

It used to be that teaching experience gained you points, but that is no longer the case. However, having said that, having some teaching experience is very beneficial and if some comes your way in the meantime, don't turn it down.

The course is expensive. It's 6.5k for the year. A lot. There are grants available so look into this.

The course is very demanding. It is not academically challenging, but is a real test of endurance, organisation and stress levels.

I had a very positive experience of the PGDE (the new name for what was the HDIP) overall. You really get out of it what you put into it to be honest.

Your hours will depend on the subjects you teach and the college you do it in.

The point I made about teaching experience not being counted is in regard to the NUI colleges. They are:
    NUI Maynooth
    NUI Galway
    NUI Dublin (UCD)

The other colleges that do this are:
TCD - Interview and application based - 1 year full time
DCU - Interview and application based - 2 years part time

If you have any questions left, just fire away.

DCU is REALLY expensive - basically double the fees of all the others.

Worth considering if you want to hang on to your redundancy.

DCU is basically double the fees as it is basically double the time. Pretty much, in my opinion, if you have the full year to invest in it, a one year course is your best option. However I like DCU (didn't do this one myself) as it is a more realistic option for those who have other commitments, ie: children.
