I need some pointers on fixing a Mark 4 water leak

    Hey all,

Ive had a few little problems with my mark 4 golf in the close to a year that Ive owned it but now I have one that I think I caused.

I put new speakers into my car as one was broken and it was a little birthday present last year. It would seem that the old speakers were constructed in a way that let the water drops that run on the inner side of the door panel to run around the speaker and down to the drains.

The seal on that inner door panel has now perished and I need to get in there and do some sealing with weatherproof sealant and do something with the speakers to try and direct the water away from the speakers in the first place.

My only problem is that the guide I found was for an electric windowed car. I have manual and Im afraid if I take off the window winder from the door panel that the window will do something odd and break or I wont be able to re attach it properly.

    Has anyone done this?
All I need to do is take the door panel pictured below totally off so I can clean up the area, make some directional beads of sealant to direct water away from the speakers and reseal the panel. I have to do it on the drivers side too.

You can see in the second image the little thing that the original speaker has to direct the water around it.

I know there are guides on the interweb but Im a little unsure and I dont want to take any chances.

    Thanks
    bbk

    They come off handy enough.

There is 2 rubber grommets near the top of that panel. Pull them off and wind the window down til you see the 2 bolts that clamp the glass. Loosen these then pull the window up the way and either tape it over the top of the door frame with some scotch tape or make a small timber wedge to hold it in place.

The window winder handle comes off by sliding a little collar on the handle to one side and then it just slips off. The collar is right beside the door card and looks like a fat black plastic washer.

There is 2 big screws in behind the door handle. The plastic outer half of the handle will pop off with a screw driver.

Think there is also a screw on the side of the door card that faces the car. When these are out you will need some gentle force and a wide flat screwdriver to ''pop'' that card away from the door. It is held in with some plastic clips. Chances are you may break one or 2 doing this. Don't panic, it will survive without them. If you want you can pick some up in the main dealers for a few pence anyway

Oh dear, I forgot I made this thread. I decided to take the easy way out that a guide said I could do so I unbolted the bottom and side bolts, stripped the perished seal and got some silicone sealant and caked it on and did the bolts back up.

    Seems to be working well!!

Thanks for the post though. Im sure its gonna come in handy when my easy way out job fails lol

looks like the drain holes in the door are blocked, you wouldnt get much water at speaker level otherwise

I was checking the drains and indeed there was a lot of waxy dirt around there but when I put water into the door through the speaker hole it poured out perfectly. Then I poured loads of water in to dislodge anything I could incase.

I took a look at the old seal that I stripped off the door panel and it was soaking with water, almost a sponge so I was glad I did the job.

The water dripped down the door panel and onto the speaker and through the old rivet holes that held the old speakers.

Im sure many things contributed to it and probably my fault but anyway. All fixed.

The drivers side door was showing signs of the seal beginning to perish. The speaker was fine but the a part of the seal was wet.
