    HI,

I’m using free software called MediaCoder. Its very good and easy to use but painfully show at converting video to Apple format for Iphone/Ipod.
Can anyone recommend better/ faster software?

    winavi2mp4 - paid
    handbreak - free

The 1st enables a pretty nifty batch conversion which allows you to select say an entire series, and let it get on with it.

The 2nd is very good, and more versatile in terms of input formats, but requires one file at a time to be added to the queue.

Both are multithreaded and will use all your cores.

I use red kawa located at www.redkawa.com
its free and you can mess around with the settings so if your willing to lose some quality on the display it will speed up and vice versa
the only bad thing is that there are ads in the program (easy enough to ignore almost like we pages even)
    but overall a good program!

I have been messing with this, and its really good.

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-video-watch-your-videos/id306550020?mt=8

If you have the data plan to support it, or you use wifi, its great, re-encodes stuff on the fly if its not in ipod format. At home its good enough for 720p mkvs on the fly at full quality.

On the road its hampered by my 3Mb upload speed which means it can stream at about 22MB a minute, which is a pretty good data rate and enough for 720p.

Loving this in combo with my ipad.
