My first gun was a Baikal 12gauge, hardy shotty. Shot my6 first fox with it and first rabbits and birds.

    Long you may wear!

Same as that! Great hardy gun take some hammerin! Stocks were made at one time from sleepers from the trans siberian railway dont know if they still are!

They are hardy all right, I sold mine to my little brother must be 10 years ago now. He still has it.
It was a simple side by side, fixed chokes, but that just made things simple.
I'd put a 6 in the open barrel and a 4 in the choked barrel and a hunting I would go.

I shot a lot of bunnies and birds with it.
I broke plenty of clays with it to, even though I was the only person using a side by side, the clays still broke.

    So enjoy it;)

interesting to think your stock is made out of trans siberian railway, if it is??
why from the railway sleepers tho??

For Madraí Rua? BB are quite good at that range. or winchester 00's
The Baikal will take AFAIK 70mm cartridges so just verify before using. It is written on or near the chamber.

Remington make a Nitro express AFAIK and they are a powerful shell.

Railway sleepers? I suppose as they are cheap, and are freely available in Russia as they have some length of railway.
the Russians are great at recycling out of necessity rather than fashion ;)

    They waste nothing.

The older Baikals only took 2 3/4 and some of the later ones took 3"
Make sure you check on the chamber, if it is a side by side when you break the shotty it is written underneath the barrels if I remember correctly, on the machined steel part..
See below Top of the range Baikal, Points to note, high end sling and sling swivel;)

I had a Baikal that would take 2 3/4 but not 3" Mag cartridges.
So I advised poster to check before shooting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 362 ✭✭EastTyrone

I'll try, I'm more into hardware than soft ware though.
My Da was more a showband man than dancing at the crossroads

He looks to me on for gun advice now, strange how time has changed.
He grew out of shooting around the 45 mark, where as I am getting more into it the older I get

He never had the amount of money I had though, he was married with 3 kids by my age.

    I'll get it later Clive.

    What was your first gun/rifle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,072 ✭✭✭clivej

    What was your first gun/rifle?

Pump action shotgun, 5 +1, and the CZ style 22lr.
Me and the shotty didn't get on to well (not going there) so I went the rifle route.

I was advised I would have not got a rifle until I was 21 at the time or had a shotgun for a year so i went with the shotty.

I always hated the lack of range as most of my shooting is on open ground, So I have more rifles and rifle oriented gear now too.

    I'd love a few more,maybe in a few years;)
