There was a guy at the Dublin Marathon expo last october who was demonstrating the use of a device for rolling out stressed muscles... I cannot find the flyer he gave me on the day.. Some of you may have kept it for posterity..If so a phone no. or address would be appreciated..

If you do a quick search on the forum, there's at least two mails with supplier details.

I have the distributors contact details for the stick. PM me for them as I have no connection to the man/ company but can provide you with a starting point.

I was recommended this today by my physio, he said he uses it:

    http://store.tptherapy.com/Hip_and_Lower_Back_Performance_Kit_p/tpt-kit-hp.htm

I'll be trying it out next week to see if it's any use. Bit expensive though and dont know exactly what the difference is between it and a bog standard piece of white foam roller.

looks good for smaller areas but will be difficult to really access some of the larger groups. A bog standard foam roller is hard to beat, and then you can start fine tuning with the balls and smaller objects of misery/massage:D

Seems very expensive for what it is?

agreed - quite expensive and you can get by with much cheaper tools as explained in my video

The TP kit is worth every penny. I have the full kit and it is much better than any foam roller. It comes with some excellent tutorial dvd's which is more than I can say for the stick. This is not a comment on the vieo in this thread which is helpful and well done.

I would still recommend a stick as it can get to places you cant get to with the foam roller or TP Quadballer. It's also very portable. The foam roller from the company that produce the TP kit is also the best on the market much better than any foam. You can buy all of this for less than €200 in Dublin. That's 4 trips to a physio and it's worth every penny IMO.

Thanks lads, bought a stick today. Just used it on my right calf and recoiled with the pressure on a serious knot in there. Going to have to work on it..After 10 to 15 difficult passes I can feel tension 30 mins later. Wouldnt have really noticed it without using the stick...Hopefully I will get benefits from this.... Might look into a foam roller also.. Good informative thread here...I must try look after my muscles more considering the stress I put on them....

I would agree with much of that as overall just getting more people to foam roll or use any kind of myofacial release will work out wayyyyy cheaper than having to go to the physio.

    An ounce of prevention....

Where did you get the stick?

I have the TP roller mentioned above. 'The Grid', Appears to be pretty strong compared to normal rollers and hopefully won't wear out. Working well on calves and shins/hip. Not finding it so good for hamstrings so far..

Got it in the Wheelworx triathlon shop in the fonthill business park... The localised pain at the trigger point is now 80% better than it was... The stick must be doing some good, though and someone with better knowledge can answer this, would it get better by itself...

    Hi ,

Not sure if posting in right place/forum but I'm 9 weeks not running training with IT band injury. I have raced two sprint tris in lthe ast month, as physio said I could get through 5 k without training. I.m managing to run them in round 24 mins which is the most I can hope for now when not training. I got my hopes built up last week as I was able to go for two slow 2o min jogs. I can't do any speed work. After racing Sunday, leg sore all week, to be expected as I know it not fully better. Will feel lot better next week, but then have sprint tris every two weeks for while. I was hoping it would be somewhat better by now, I'm hoping do first Olympic in August but for that I would need to be training for a 10k. Getting very frustrated now. I know ideally racing isn't doing it any good, its either not race and rest , hence not train or try get back training after resting but miss races.
sorry for bit of ramble but how long have peoples recovery been and oh ya this was my question has anyone done aqua jogging ? Is it good and is there classes anywhere in Dublin? I could not find any, think class be good to go to once a week and wouldn't be as boring. Might get me up to 10k fitness ??

It sounds like the bursa under your ITB are inflamed. This is what happens when ITBS goes untreated for a period of timeand you continue to run. Once they get inflamed it takes months to recover. Running when the bursa are inflamed will mean you probably won't recover. They may not be inflamed, then again they may.

Go to a good masseur (ditch physios, pretty useless) I've had great experiences with people trained by the nsrt.

Key thing though is to recover before running. Training and worsening an injury is counterproductive.

Kensio tape can help once the inflamation has gone down.

    Hi Tunney,

Thanks for your response. You did give me a number before for soft tissue guy so will give him a call now. Yes I am finding physio a bit pointless. I just go back in hope they tell me I can run but in fairness I know what to do with leg now and that its not better. Might be a case of me just forgetting about doing my remaining sprint tris, next week and in Athlone and just try get better. Its going on too long now.
    Thanks again .

Got a foam roller myself just a few weeks ago and remembered to bring it home from work just the other day. So last night was my first use of it and my god did it hurt!! My shins and calves were in knots. The video demo guy was putting the free leg on top of the rolling leg while doing the calves "for added weight" but not a hope of that. I knew it wasn't going to go well but my god that was painful.

In the video the guy said that when u find a painful point i should hold the roller at that point with pressure on it until the pain dissipates. He suggested this should happen after 20 - 30 seconds. I had it ion some points for up to a minute and it was getting any better! I presume i just need to get rolling more often? Or will the roller even get such knots out?

Finally when is best to roll? Is rolling after a run advisable, after stretching, should i stretch after rolling also etc?

    Bring on the pain tonight!

I've been using mine for about 3-4 week now and would use it most evening. I would usually start with both calf on the roller before going to the freel leg on top part. I have found it great my calf is knot free for the first time in months.

I tend to use it in the evenings mostly and do some stretching after use, but didnt find much info on this.
