    Folks,

I had my oil and filter changed last week by the local mechanic and my car has not been serviced for nearly 2 years. The car is due to be NCTed in January 2011 again and I was thinking of just getting it fully serviced nearer to the end of the year before teh NCT. I don't use the car too much (prefare to walk and cycle) and I was just wondering do you think I should get it servided now or hold off until nearer to the NCT? I have driven over 10000Km since the last service. Its just that pennys are tight at the moment and I would need to fork out another 100 euro on top of the 40 odd I payed frot eh oil and filter change.

No. You changed the oil and filter so why do it again if you only cover 5k a year? Unless you think something is wrong with the car, I would put it through the NCT and see what happens after that. Probally nothing if is in good nick.
I would recomend a service at least once a year though. It will save you money in the long run.

I'd say yes. Most service intervals are 10,000 km or (perhaps more important in this instance given the low mileage) every year

You say car has not been serviced for 2 years, but you had oil and filter changed on it 2 weeks ago. Oil change is one of the main parts of the service. Have a look at the service intervals in your car manual you might only need to change air filter and sparks as well which is an easy job to do at home.

So should I just get the air filter changed. I am a total munbwit when it comes to cars so I would probaly best off getting a mechanic to do this. How much do you reckon it will cost?

What kind of car is it?

TBH, the Air Filter is about the easiest thing to change. I'm a bit of a numbwit when it comes to the oily bits, but even i couldn't mess up an air filter change if I tried.

Air filter will be about €15 (if that). It is usually housed in a plastic rectangular box up near the top of the engine. It usually just splits apart, or else has some clips holding the plastic together. This should be in your user manual.
If you are uncomfortable doing this, ask the guy in the motor factors to throw it in for you. They mightn't even charge for this...
