What's the deal when you buy a car and need to drive it home. Are you insured for that car for that journey??

Nope. Not unless you have changed over your insurance to that car!

Ring your insurance company and they'll give you cover over the phone so you can drive it that day. They'll send out the proposal form to you the same day.

But what about Tax as well?

Tax wouldn't bother me, the Gardai generally appreciate that you can't tax it immediately :)

Ah, but what if it's your first car and you don't have an insurance company?

Probably best to get someone else to drive it home for you.

Well then of course not. How could you possibly be insured to drive your car if, as you said, you don't have an insurance company?

I was going to suggest speaking to your insurance company as I know I'm insured (3rd party) to drive all taxed cars (with the owners permisson) but if you've never had insurance before how do you expect to be covered?

I put a deposit on the car, then sorted out insurance (called around, picked one and paid), and the next day picked up the car and paid the rest. They gave me a policy number to give if the guards stopped us
