Well, am I missing anything? Cables were added so I can be assured I will have all the necessary cables, plus, I love having extras :D

BTW, weight is off by around 8 kilos.

Changing hard drives after hearing of problems with the Spinpoint and the MB I selected, any recommendations?

The only thing that order is missing is an England flag, it's only 20p:D

My dad'd kill me if he saw a huge England flag arrive in the post :D

Swapped in new, better, cheaper motherboard:

Hey, consider picking up this CL7 RAM instead (or any CL7 RAM). The Phenom II's and indeed their Intel equivalents all prefer lower latency RAM- even at the expense of high speed, i.e. CL7 1333Mhz RAM will outperform CL9 1600Mhz RAM. It's pretty much the same price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 670 ✭✭✭C.D.

PS The GA-890GPA-UD3H comes with 2 right angled SATA cables so no need to buy additional ones!

Also, I have heard very good things about the Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro which is cheaper @ £16.24. I don't know what the performance of the cooler you've chosen is, but the above should be fine unless you are doing some serious overclocking.

I'm getting the two cables just in case, you never know :D

I was going to get the Freezer 7, but on Tom's Hardware, it was one of the worst performing budget coolers out of the ten best they picked, the Zalman was one of the top 3 (IIRC0

Damn, I can't order that RAM, it may arrive later than the other parts as it has an Exclamation mark saying timed delivery is unavaialable, and any extra waiting would kill me if I had al the other parts, thanks for the suggestion though, maybe I'll figure out how to change the timings in the future.

i downgraded the mothereboard. the reason for that is that you are not going to use crossfireX and this one is just as good but its just not crossfirex compatible. those more expensive one's are more expensive because the have 2 pcie slots. no need for that. so yeah. i also selected a cheaper case and added 3 extra fans. it already comes with two. and by doing that i could get you a 5870. tell me what ya think

Pretty nice, but I was actually going to get a second 5770 Vapor-X in the future :D

Other than that, it's pretty similar to the one I proposed, thanks for the suggestions though :D.

ok how about this. this motherboard is dual @ x16 which means both of the cards will run at full speed unlike the gigabyte one which runs one in x8

Hmm, is that £1300 or €1300?
BTW, I need the monitor, it's my very first build and the little cheap LCD I have doesn't cut it as a PC monitor.

EDIT: Hmm, I may go for the Crosshair IV MoBo, it would push the price to it's limit, but from reviews it seems it may be worth it.

Thanks, I'll definitely take all this in to consideration, and I may go for the Crosshair IV, actually, it would push my original proposal to 1320 or so, but since it's a reward from my parents, I may put in a little bit of money towards it :D

CAN I ASK WHY WE MUST USE ALL CAPS

Anyway, I'm going with AMD because I don't plan to do much video editing/rendering and other things that do well with many threads, just gaming and a small bit of rendering and video converting.

    Also, cheaper.

hi, just a suggestion but why don't you order from www.hardwareversand.de? I have just ordered from them and I'll tell you how it goes if you like. they are the cheapest website i have found. plus they'll build it for you just for an extra fiver. anyway i have built this for you. it costs about 1,100 with the paypal fees and shipping. i used the pc configurator. you will only need a crosshair III since you are only going two way crossfire. anyway here is the spec

I decided not to go with Hardwareversand for, some reason I cannot remember. I think it was the pricing was too similar to warrant getting all the manuals and stuff in German.
Anyway, I am going to order from Ebuyer, they're as cheap as Pixmania (in most cases) and the shipping is very cheap, I just need my above question answered now.

I was just wondering on some of those lists why elazar was choosing €200 motherboards to go with €130 graphics cards... if you're only running HD5770s then even PCIe2.0 x4 mode isn't too bad, let alone x8! :P

Hmm, may as well go for the Gigabyte board I originally picked then, which has support for CrossfireX.

But that x16 isn't fully saturated, from what Solitaire is saying, it seems only a quarter of that is saturated, which would make x8 fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,594 ✭✭✭Deano12345

Performance loss is exaggerated, running a 5970, at 8x is only about 2% I think, less than a frame a second.

You wouldn't even notice it. Like Solitaire says you wouldn't even use 4 of the PCI-E lanes with a 5770

Edit : Quote was a mess so I took it out.

Oh god, the HAF X is up for sale on Ebuyer, MUST SEE IF PARENTS CAN AFFORD!

    I've worshipped computers since I was 7 :p

Trick is to make it your occupation as well as a hobby then get a life too :D

Anyway, the PCIe lanes allocated to a GPU only affect the speed at which it can grab texture data from the system, and a lot of people forget we're currently on PCIe 2.0, which is twice as fast per lane than the original PCIe bus. When they re-tested the phenomenon on Toms Hardware a while ago HD5**0 cards on PCIe 2.0 seem much more bandwidth-friendly than older ATi cards on PCIe 1.1, and as the GPU computing power and memory bandwidth goes down the need for massive PCIe bus bandwidth also drops. x8 is fine for anything shy of a supercomputer, and even x4 isn't that bad on PCIe 2.0, although it could impose a slight bandwidth limitation on ultra-high-end cards. Its PCIex1 that you need to avoid like the plague :p

EDIT - HAF-X?! *runs off to look*

I've only been worshipping for a few years now, since I first got Morrowind GOTY about 2 years ago.

My dream job would be building computers, even though I'm only building my first this month. Sadly, however, there doesn't seem to be great demand for it :(

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

    Heh... Morrowind... :)

There may have been more demand during the boom years but rising hardware prices and the continuing consolidation of the industry has hurt everyone (including the industry itself) something bad over the past two years... :(

Mixture of factors, recession coinciding with both an unbalanced CPU and GPU release schedule and a massive hike in memory IC prices are causing the brunt of the woe right now, and the knock-on effects of the above hits everyone's pocket down the line as OEM and retailers are forced to hike prices, lose more profits, hike even further... etc.

Damn, wish I had patience, else I'd wait for prices to drop.

Surprised your parents didn't link the budget for the build to your exam results - no better motivation :pac:

Best of luck with the exams and the build and sure post it up in the "your main PC" sticky for us to have a gawk

The motivation is if I study hard enough (1-1.5 hours a day at least) I get it, my mam said that, she kinda regrets promising that now :D

Of course I'll post it to the Main PC Sticky, Infact, I may even make a timelapse.
