Unable to work due to illness

    Hi,

My long term girlfriend has a chronic illness. She has been living in Ireland for 15 months now.

She has been working and finished a course during the past year. She finds it extremely difficult to work as the drugs she takes suppress her immune system so she is sick nearly every second week (long working hours of her job doesn't help).

She applied for the medical card last year but was refused under habitual residence reasons.

The problem is she is not paid for days she misses thus she can lose 125 euro each day she is sick (she only works 2 long days a week). This puts huge financial strain on us.

Can she claim for anything for the days she is sick?

    Thanks for any help/advice.

If a person is not entitled to sick pay from work you may get Illness Benefit if they have enough (PRSI) social insurance contributions.
